ive done it once. your trans will get extremely hot, and you will be on your brakes hard and often. it can be done, but its not as easy as a manual.

I've run in open track events since Oct 99. I've added a second cooler in front of the AC condensor to run in series with the factory cooler. I just leave it in drive and go. I know how far I need to go, with the foot, to drop it down when needed, so you're not shifting manually.
As far as brakes, you'll use just as much brake as you do with a manual. The way I learned to drive on track is to use the brakes to slow the car, not the trans. You heel 'n toe a manual to be in the right gear when you exit a corner, not to slow you down to enter it.
My 'other' F-Body is a 3rd Gen T/A.
