Default OPEN Road Racing

Below is a link to a different type of Road Racing. This is done on a real road not on a track. This is in car video shot from my car on 5/21/06. The road is in the middle of Nevada and closed to traffic. You pick a speed you will attempt to average for the 90 miles of the race. Anyone else who picks the same speed is in your class. Whoever comes the closest to a perfect time over or under is class winner. So it is a high-speed time distance rally. The most famous of these is The Silver State Classic Challange. My navigator is Boyce Goff who is a moderator in the Northwest section of this forum. I am posting this to hopfully spark intrust and get more racers out to give it a try. Please excuse the fact that my car is not LS 1/6 powered, but it is a Chevy. So turn up the sound and enjoy the sights and sounds of Open Roading. The video is 15 mins long(max length we could post so you get only 2/3 of the race). Thanks for watching

Question

Is the 'chute a joke, or is it a required fail safe back-up in the highest speed classes??!

That is what happens when you blow a tire at 204. All the damage was done by the tire explosion. I never hit anything, there was no impact.

That's some intense stuff right there...

Does the number of times he points his hand in a certain direction signify how sharp the turn is?

Spazzy,
No, the number of times he points is not related to how tight the turn is, but the number of times he points down is the number of times he says slow down for the turn. We do have an intercom system to talk to each other from helmet to helmet.

Default tires

Daily,
The pic above of the blowout was Hoosier a R4SO4. That was the 4th and worst of 4 incidents with them. I had run the R3SO3's for years with out any problem. But as soon as we went to the 04's we started having problems. Now I run Continental V-Max's rated to 225mph, but only come in 4 sizes so I had to buy 19 inch rims to fit them. Of course I had to buy CCW's.

That is crazy

Glad you didn't hit anything! At that speed and looking at the damage from the tire alone, you would have ended up in a little wad of metal and fiberglass by the side of the road.

Default Nice!

Wow thats really cool! I'm glad you brought this event up to this forum. I think a lot of LSx powered cars, espically the f-bodies would be great canidates of this type of race. I having been only waiting for the right time to part take in this event. I have an '88 BMW M6 and have a video of several guys back in the late 80s who did the La Carrerra Classic (thing same thing as silver state classic, only in Mexico) doing that sort of race with stock BMWs. I thought about how cool it would be to do it in my z-28! Can you run it stock? I guess all you would need is a roll bar right?

Default Anyone can run

Kid,
I Know you can run a 110 average with no rollbar, you my even be able to run 125 average with a 145 topspeed with out. The guy who would know is Boyce (nataSS) on this forum he runs a 4th gen on the Open Road.

After the last ORR I got to talking with Boyce about going that direction. Done the straight line way too many times to count in years past, current vehicles just aren't suited to aerodynamics. Need to look for something else and start from scratch spending time (and $$$$$) for a solid set up that will hold. From Boyce's recount it sounds like if you aren't tight things will rattle off in no time and cooling are big issues to address.

Wonder if Jeffy will be wonked that Boyce told me your hands were literally shaking bout half an hour after the run due to keeping control - you have to be in shape to make it to the finish line the way you left it

Hmm, i'll keep that all in mind. Cooling could be a problem? Is that becuase of the lack of front end openings to get flow over the radiator? I guess my t-tops would not be condusive to this race...
