Default Auto mods for road racing?

I plan to do some HPDE's in my automatic 1999 Z28. I plan to either do a shift kit or electronically increase the line pressure. I'm keeping the stock converter to keep heat down. Also a tranny fluid cooler.

I know everyone will say swap a T56 (no doubt more fun) but I don't have the cash for it and I have seen many competitive auto cars.

Will a tranny cooler be enough to keep it from overheating? I would like to do a cast aluminum trans pan but I don't want the added 2 quart size becuase it will bottom out during daily driving. Does anyone make a standard depth cast aluminum trans pan with cooling fins?

I have done some road racing in my previous vette with a A4 and it never overheated with a shift kit, cooler, and pan.

Okay, does the lack of suggestions mean that I'll be fine using my automatic car for some road racing or not?

Here is a nice write up that will help you out. I'm going to do this to my wifes Z28 as she enjoys going with me to open track days (when her health allows it). Depending on your location you may be able to find someone with HP Tuners or LS1Edit that could do the changes to the tranny table for you cheaply or for free.

From what I have heard, keeping the tranny cool is the key.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to do everything I can to keep the tranny cool. I will eventually get the computer reprogrammed to increase the line pressures but for now I've been told that as long as the temp is cool that I won't have any problems at all.

If tranny heat is a concern then go with a Perma Cool external tranny cooler with a 900+ cfm fan. Also bypass the radiator tranny cooler.

I have a B&M 24,000 GVW cooler mounted infront of the AC condensor and it should stay cool.

I am debating a shift kit because i certainly don't want any shifts during a turn but stock the tranny shifts soft enough that it doesn't make too much of a difference. With a shift kit if it were to shift while in a turn the shift would be hard enough to cause the car to spin out. Dilemna. Shift kit or not?
