Hi every one! I am in the process of putting an 02 lq9 and 4l65e transmission into a 1972 C10. My next step is the transmission. It is currently set up for a transfer case as it was in a Cadillac Escalade.
I have already purchased a tail shaft and housing for 2 wheel drive tranny.
My question is how are most of you making it 2 wheel drive for your swaps?
I understand it is quite involved. So is it best left to at tranny shop?
I also would want some upgrades and a shift kit, any recommendations on good shop in the central Connecticut ?
I have one apart on my garage floor right now.
Pretty much everything needs to come out. Seeing how everything needs to come out this one is going to be rebuilt while it's apart, not 100% necessary but might as well.
Empty case on the right, and most of the parts. The valve body is out of the picture. If your trans is in really good condition you don't have to remove the valve body.

Yes, unless you want to learn how to rebuild a trans, it is best left to a trans shop.
If you have a new(ish) trans, a mechanic could probably swap from 4wd to 2wd in one hour.
However as Jay implied, opening a well-worn trans is likely to tear the teflon seals and gaskets, creating a slippery slope to a complete rebuild.
Yes, I would install the full Transgo HD2 kit, the high-RPM pump spring and perhaps a few other upgrades. Make sure a 7-friction 3/4 clutch is installed; a 4L65E rebuild kit will include that.
I would 1. have the trans rebuilt while the shafts were being swapped, 2. sell you 4wd trans and buy a 2wd trans. I chose option 2 when I came across one already rebuilt ready to go, I then turned around and recouped some money by selling my running 4wd trans.
