When I was 500HP/ 500TQ, I felt the R888’s ( 315/30/18) were my gift from the traction Gods. I was able to keep a relative low profile, good handling & the traction was night & day compared to the previous Khumo tires. I used to DD the car & was able to get 12k good miles out of them ( which was surprising).

Now: my HP/TQ is significantly increased & the R888’s are not able to keep pace.
I’m considering the Proxes TQ, I’ll give up a little handling & tire hieght & trade for a little traction past 4K. ( or at least find out if they can help).

“At the end of the day”, in my opinion the R888’s are a great option up to the 500ft lbs threshold.

What's your set up and power level? Did you need to prewarm them to make them stick or did they do well without? Thanks
they are still on my car currently and so far i think have around 10k miles but im not sure as the last few years i haven't driven the car much (deployed, etc.) Im at about 440rwhp and they tend to do decent without me having to prewarm them granted i was in hawaii up until February so its always warm there which may have helped. Honestly the main thing i like about them over the 555r is the improved handling however the r888's are known to be a lil noisy

Great review! That gives me a pretty good idea on how they do at different power levels. Did you need to roll fenders and use BFH mod on inner fenders to run the 315s? I'm thinking a 295 will clear, but not sure about 305 and 315.

Sounds like tread life is pretty close to the 555r as well.. I noticed the r888s have more tread depth, so I'd assume theyd last a touch longer than 555r being they are the same compound. R888 is 6/32 and I believe 555r is 4/32 new.

We are pretty close to power level so it sounds like they would do the trick in this power range. I keep reading quite a few that prefer them over the 555r. I've heard they were noisy, but since I have a loudmouth catback I doubt if notice much lol.

My other concern is having 265/35/18 on front and a slightly shorter 295/30/18 on the rear. Not sure if it would look weird or anything being .2-.3" shorter out back. What size do you run in the front and rear? Any pictures of yours at all?

Another thought is regardless of which tire you choose, I wonder if the slightly taller sidewall will help. The 295/30/18 has slightly less sidewall than the 305 in either option

My car not lowered yet but only mods I've done it cut the bumpstocks off and very little BFH modding.

Sounds like they fit better than I thought so even if I run a 305 that should be 0retty doable with minimal mods.. I'll have to do some searching for pictures on the cut bump stops. Thanks for the info! This wouldn't be such a tough decision if they didn't cost so much lol.

Remember all 305s or whatever you choose really isn't the same width. Example, a 275 nitto may be a inch wider than a 275 BF Goodrich tire or vise versa.

I don't THINK this... I KNOW this. I've seen this by working part time at Firestone. All Brands widths are NOT the same.

Here's a pic of the bump stop lip cut and bump stops to use:

Bump stop replacement, can be found as low as $6/shipped ea.

Yea i know the 555rs run pretty small and lots of others flucuate. Lots of good info to give me an idea of what to expect. It is making me think I need to just buy some 305s and make them fit. Some of these sales are going to be over soon so I will have to bite the bullet eventually. Lol

Exactly right. I've seen this quite often, and for whatever reason it seems like the 555r runs very narrow

Thanks for backing up my words. I'e been at Firestone since first of the year working part time and in the very little time I've been there I've seen it over and over. I'm willing to say my Toyo drag radials I just bought will be a different width than my sumitomo tires. I'll report the results Saturday if it don't rain. (Fingers crossed)

Absolutely. Just for reference I've had both the Summitomo HTRZ and Toyo Proxes TQ both 315/35/17, and the TQ was just a hair wider

Thanks for letting me know brother. I bet there is a day to night difference between the two tires in performance. I've heard nothing but awesome things about the the Toyos.

Yep no problem man. Big difference in performance for sure lol. The Summitomo is one of the worst street tires I've ever ran in terms of straight line traction, but at the time they were like $100 per tire in a 315, so I couldn't pass up trying it lol. The TQ seems to wear and handle like the 555r, but grips a little better in a straight line. Great overall tire for the price IMO. I used to have a 315 555r as well

Yes, I know that now. I'm right under 500 horse at the rear tire with my LS2 combo. The summitomo tires almost put me in the ditch on more than one occasion. Never dealt with nittos. I always heard nittos and stick cars is like oil and water. They don't mix well.

Oh wow, yeah at 500 rwhp with a stick I can only imagine how bad those tires were lol. Mine were on a 300 rwhp 04 Mustang Gt, and even at that power they sucked. You are right about he 555r being temperamental on a stick car. Everything needed to be done right to get them to hook well, which wasn't always feasible

FYI R888Rs are the new compound. I picked up a set for road course. Depending on tune, im between 750-800 RWHP and 800-850 RWTQ in my gen 5 Camaro....

I’ll see how they handle that power....
