Question Turbo Drain into Oil Pan - Huron Speed V3 AC Turbo Kit

I'm at the point where I need to add a oil drain from the turbo to my oil pan. I blocked off the oil level sensor and filled my oil pan with 5 quarts of water to simulate a "full" oil pan. I know our cars use more than 5 quarts but the extra will be elsewhere in the engine/filter.

As you can see in the pics, I am about 1.849" from the top of the pan. I scribed a mark on the pan.

I know I need the turbo drain as low as possible and it seems that most people put it somewhere above the oil drain plug.

How far above my scribe line should I place my fitting? Thoughts?

Thx!

If I had to do it over again I would put it in the front cover

Agree. But if you must put it in the side I'd go an inch above cause you should be running at least 6 quarts if you plan to race the car.

It really depends on your turbo location and confirming you can run a line that won't get in the way from the crank pulley or serp belt. eBay has a cover for ideas.

Front mount turbo, ATI dampener, stock size. Link for ebay, have no clue on what to look for.

You better start knowing what to look for if you're doing this build

One of many examples, not trying to sell anything and don't own the company. This is just for reference:

I got the Huron speed v1 on my Camaro and put the drain in the pan and haven't had any probs with it for 5k miles. On my 84 c10 with the trick manifold I put the drain in the front cover, but I don't think the ac pump would fit on that side then.

If not using a scavenge pump, putting it in the front cover depends on how high the turbo is mounted if it's gravity drain, or am I missing something? I guess I would just figure if that worked it would be the preferred/recommended method since the front cover is easily removed.

I appreciate your help as well as others, isn't that what this site is for, to share ideas and help others? Just needed a lead, that's all.

Thank you laytoncamaroz28 & blk99camaro for the pics and ideas.

Since I'm keeping my AC, might not be enough room to go to the front cover on that side. Huron Speed says to go to the oil pan above the oil drain.

Billiumss, I have the V3 A/C kit on order, so I will be interested to see what route you go, I think I'm going to follow Huron's suggestion with above the oil drain plug. I would like to think that they know what works best since it is their kit though I know that is not always the case with some parts/kits. I don't see a lot of specific info in a search in regards to locations, so I would assume MOST of the users of the same kit are going with Huron's recommendations and having no issue.

Always do.... Owners manual says 5.5 quarts.

I usually run 5.75 to 6 quarts since I ordered the car brand new back in 2000. I don't road race the car, never had any issues.

I'll be going to the side of the pan above the oil drain.

Youll be starving the engine of oil on hard acceleration with that little oil. Do whatever you want, but dont log oil pressure or it might scare you. This is proven as fact. For normal street driving your fine.

Oil is cheap, a motor is not...

Since this is my first time with a turbo LS car, its the little things that can make a big difference, often overlooked.... Thanks guys!
