Default Rear end gearing in a 99 camaro with a t56

What gear ratio is in a 99 camaro with a t56 6 speed and a ls1 engine? I'm swapping this engine and trans set up in a 68 camaro and need to know what gears to put in the rear end. Thanks

Stock 3.42. Go with 4.11 if you are staying na and want to have fun. W 3.42s its a little lazy. I’ve had both so that is my experience

Thanks guys. It has 4.56s right now and I haven't drove it yet so maybe I'll try it before I change them. It came with a new set of 3.73 and a bearing kit that I can put in as a option too. Just want to keep the rpms down when on the highway

You've got two overdrives. You'll be fine with the 4.56's on the highway. If they suit your engine combo I'd leave em.

I swapped a 2002 LS1 and T56 into my '68 camaro and used 4.11 gears......In 6th gear, I'm running right at 2000 rpm at 75mph.

If I had 4.56s, I'd sure try them before I changed gears.

Same as GonHuntin, 4.11 in my 68. I had 3.73 in my 76 T/A that had the LS1/6 speed and it would cruise at around 16-1700 at 75 which was too low for me. That was my reasoning for the 4.11 gears, but I would give the 4.56 a try.

try the 4.56. don't spend the money. Ratios look decent by gear.

I'm running a 2002 T56 with 4.11s and a 31" tall tire. I need to be doing at least 75-80mph for 6th gear since it's .5 to 1. 4.56s would work better for me.

I have 3.90's, and 80 mph in 6th is ~1800 rpm. Try the 4.56's and drop to a 4.11 if it screams too much, but based on merim's post, you should be fine.

I ran 4.56s' for 4 years BUT behind an A4 and that rear end is going back in as soon as the weather gets warmer. I did much travelling with it. I only had a .7 overdrive ratio,2500rpm @ 60mph,3000rpm @ 72mph.

I had 4.11 gears in my nova for a while behind my T56. With a 28 inch tire, it was nice for acceleration but I was shifting A LOT. 1st gear is very very short when you have 4.11's in the back. I just got a new for 9 inch and put 3.70's in it to help 1st gear last longer.

My 2 cents

I started with 3.73's and 28" tall tire. I could go 80 MPH at about 2000 RPM. Then I switched to 26" tall tires and 4.11 gears and the car feel alot quicker. I am still only about 2200 RPM at 80. I would keep the 4.56 and see how you like it. That thing should jump out of the hole with that setup.

This thread mirrors the debate I had with myself when I bought the 9" - it seemed like whichever direction I went, either 1st gear or 6th gear became all-but-useless. After making a spreadsheet to compare the numbers, I finally chose a 3.70 gear as the best compromise. A significant factor in choosing the 9" was the fact that there's a large selection of available ratios, so if I decide that I need to go deeper or taller with the gear ratio, I should be able to zero in on the ideal match.

You guys who've driven with 4.56 (or similar) gears - didn't that gearset make 1st gear basically pointless??

I'm sure that all depends on tire width and height. I'm running 31X16 tire with a 4.11 gear and I would prefer a 4.56 just so I could use 6th more often. It would also depend on which T56 is being used. I have the .5 sixth gear while my buddy has the .63 sixth on his setup.

Oh yeah - I forgot that there are people out there who actually have enough room to utilize some nice meats... (I'm not jealous!!)

Yeah, if someone's able to put some decent-sized tire to the ground, & has a halfway-reasonable suspension to be able to plant the power, by all means, install the deep gears & launch like an F-18 off the USS Enterprise...
