"When will the 10 bolt break?"

1500 miles after you install a Rossler TH400.
My pinion gear is missing some teeth right now.

My 10 bolt is "by some act of god" still alive after two years of low 12 to low 11 thrashing. The best the car ran was 11.77 motor, and 11.01 on a 100 shot with a t-5. The best 60 I got was a 1.50 launching at 5500 on the bottle with 28x10.50x15 drags and a spec 4 clutch. The only problem I had so far is breaking an auburn, trashing a torson "weld mod fixed that ", and for some odd reason it keeps loseing the backlash on the gears , and it howls so bad on the highway you can't hear yourself think.

I have to disagree with keliente. You CAN build up a 10 bolt, for much less then the cost of a 12, 9in, or dana 60. High Perfomance Pontiac just did a 2 issue article on building up your 10 bolt to handle 425 rwhp, for $558. Issues Oct. and Nov. 06. It says, and I agree, if you're living at the drag strip, and that's the primary place of racing/beating, then a new rear is better then building a 10 bolt. However, if you're more into road/track/autocrossing, then a built 10 bolt will be a better and cheaper option.

I only have about $250 invested. It still has the stock cover. But at any rate my next combo sould make about 430 rwhp on the motor, 540 on the spray (TNT power ring) through an m6. the old combo made 350 motor, 450 bottle

you losing backlash because the housing is bending/warping.

And I agree that it is broken, and in more than one way. hell, you broke 2 carriers, that counts as 2 breaks. and if you drive on a welded spider gear rear, It's only a matter of time befor you break an axle.

I know. I don't care. The record for 60' on a 10 is like 1.36. I want to see if I can beat that. If it dose it, great I'll hang it above my tool box. If not, it goes in the dumpster and I get an S60 from strange. I just want to see how far I can push it. It will be fixed no more.

I have done 1.37 spraying at 20 mph at MIR, car pulls 1.41-1.45 N/A
runs high tens natural 10.87 best. 10.0 on a 125 shot.

Have been running this combo for 4-5 years now.
Moser street axles, GM 3.73, Torsion...

Not pushing the 10 bolt, I know they are weak - however I have been very lucky.. This year actually tried to launch on spray but broke D/S.

Just converted from 700 to M6 - we will see how it fairs with that.

I bought my car put a ram hd powergrip in it,et streets on and made two passes the third pass I twisted the spline on one axle shaft right off.I dumped the clutch at 4000. My car is stock except for an slp lid, cold air kit and smoth bellow. It ran a 13.54 and then a 13.39 before breaking. Good thing I only bought the car for the engine and trans cuz the rear end is shshshshttttttttt.

from the research i have done, the crush sleeve in our 10 bolts is one of the big problems. the power our motors make, crushes the sleeve and messes up the backlash. this causes the pinion to become loose which is the roaring noise you hear. then its only a matter of time before you grenade it. a shim kit in place of the crush sleeve will fix this problem and extend the life of the 10 bolt.

I wonder how many people are swapping the rear gear out without the proper tools? And therefore not meeting the correct tollerances? At any rate the first comment is correct, the 10 inch is fine for the street but not the track. So stay off the track or start saving your money for a 12 inch or a quick change or the venerable ford 9.
