Secondary air system not ready
I finally talked my brother in law to sell me this car he's had sitting since 2008 it's a 2002 SS Camaro it has 34,000 original miles I had to put a new battery in it it will not pass smog because of the secondary air system not ready I've checked the air pump everything seems to be working properly but this code keeps coming up any advice

So then the test is not running for this system. You'd need to get a service manual and see what conditions and prerequisites are needed to run the DTCs that will complete this test, then determine which one hasn't occurred/isn't occurring.

Anytime you clear codes with a scanner or replace the battery the emissions monitors will be reset and you will have to drive the car until the cycle is complete again. If secondary system is not ready then it seems to me it hasn't completed the cycle therefore if you take it to a smog check station it will say its not ready. Just drive it for a bit and it should complete the cycle. If the cycle is completed and there is something wrong with the secondary air system then a check engine light code will turn on, if the cycle completes and there is nothing wrong detected then monitor will change to ready. Once it is ready you are good for the smog check. I have an Innova scanner that lets me know when all monitors are ready. You dont need to buy a scanner though all you need to do is drive it for a bit.

Any luck?
I've run into the same problem with my 2001 c5. I've been working on the problem for a year. The car passed smog, but fail the "visual" because my intake was no longer legal in Ca. I disconnected the battery, put a stock Intake on and reconnected. I drove the car for 6 months everyday, 40 miles a day, and the secondary air module is still not ready. Smog Guy told me to change the secondary air valves and still no luck. I have no codes, no check engine light and have put over 10k miles over the passed year trying to get the system to be ready. Any ideas?

My guess is, some prerequisite condition for running all the DTCs for the AIR system test isn't being met....the question is, why? A service manual might be helpful here.

sorry to bring up an old thread. Was this ever resolved? I'm running into this issue right now and need some help from the community.
2002 Camaro SS LE parked/garaged for about 6 years. Started up and let run in the garage at least once or twice a month. All monitors set but Air is not ready. Confirmed the secondary air monitor kicks on, air flow before the check valve but haven't checked after (couldn't break the fitting loose).
Drove for about 600 miles now following the guidelines (warm up to minutes, drive at 45mph for 3-5 min) still won't clear.
Tempted to throw some new upstream O2 sensors at it. I read that slow responding O2 sensors might not see the extra air from the secondary pump so it doesn't set the monitor.
Any advice?
Thanks!

I am having this identical issue with my 2001 SS I just bought with 13k miles.
@mchan77 I am having this identical issue with my 2001 SS I just bought with 13k miles. I have driven it off and on for a year and roughly 900 miles, I have checked the air valves, pump and shut of valve and all seem normal. I spoke to a mechanic friend who told me the same think I am reading in this thread which is some conditions are not being met to get it to run the test but no one seems to know what that condition is. I will be going to a smog / dyno tune soon to see if they can get it to clear, I’ll let you know. Let me know if you find out anything in the meantime.
Thank you.
Thank you.

On a cold start can you hear the air pump run for first say 45 seconds after engine start.
IF so and and it doesn't have any codes stored you have to drive it like you would a daily and it will go ready or set a code. If you have a scan tool be sure to scan the freeze frame codes. It has to fail 3 consecutive times usually before it will set a check engine light but the pending code is stored in the freeze frame.
