Default My custom 4” intake for an MP122H

So I swapped out a 112 for a 122 and wanted to feed it more air. The stock stuff wasn’t even adequate for the 112 let alone the 122. I originally had every intention of using mandrel bends to do this but once I started trying to make them work it was obvious it wasn’t going to happen.

So I started watching The Fabrication Series on YouTube and decided I was going to try to make a piecut intake. Mainly because I was trying to keep it under the stock hood but also cause I’ve always been a fan of piecut stuff for some reason.

This is not only my first pie cut project, it’s also my first aluminum project so the welding could look much better but it turned out functional lol I’ve had my TIG for a while but I don’t get to use it near enough, especially on aluminum. Hopefully I can change that and get some more time under the hood. Anyway, here are some pics showing the stock MAF and new MAF housing as well as the blower and of course the fabrication of the intake tube.

I think I'm either going to have it ceramic coated to help keep the heat out or possibly a ceramic Cerakote. I like the look of the aluminum but its going to soak up a lot of heat.

Right around 8-9 hours from the first cut to tightening the clamps down installing it. Not too bad for a days work.

A 4x6 band saw. Just marked the tube down each side 180* apart and then made a mark on the saw vice at 2” up from the base to have a reference mark for centerline. I set my angle at 9* to have an 18* pie cut then set my stop around 1 9/16”. Then just cut and spin the tube 180*. Rinse repeat. I was surprised I didn’t have any deflection in the cut as big as the tube is. The ol’ band saw did me proud!

i gave up on trying to use mandrel bends for stuff a while ago. pie cuts are so much easier and more flexible to use for tight areas and multiple compound bends.

A regular wood sliding compound saw works good. Wood blade and all.

Nice execution, I just can't get over all the welds. I much prefer the cleaner look of mandrel bends, but I understand a mandrel bend may not fit all applications.

Looks nice. Going from imports back to domestic stuff, everything is so much bigger lol
Pie cuts are definitely awesome for tight bends. My personal favorite.

And I manage an O'Reilly's here in FL. +1 for the Super Start battery

great job, used the same method for my intake and headers, apart from the time involved it offers a great solution in tight spaces

Looks good, you could have cut the work in half by using two 45 degree silicon elbows however.

In for the complete job. Aluminum welding is tricky business your first time. But from the work so far I see you have the patience. Nice job!

Man that's awesome. I'm currently fighting some of the same issues on my mp112. Care to elaborate on some of your findings with airflow? I have a 92mm tb on mine but with the slp lid (I'm working with an f-body) I still think the blower starving for air. I'm considering something likevtge volant system with 2 4" comes going into a 4" Y pipe.

Unfortunatly, I did so many thing at once I don’t know what was benificial and what wasn’t. I wanted to do this for the 112 but that thing started eating itself before I was able to try the 4” intake on it. And ever since if finished it, it’s been sitting at the paint shop so I haven’t been able to even get it tuned.

I did add meth injection to the tube though but it’s on the bottom side so you can’t see it.

Right on. Where did you pick up the 122? I can't find them anymore. I know some places used to offer a trade in option for the 112's but I haven't seen any deals like that in a while.

I got lucky lol a guy had 7 or 8 of them posted on eBay about a year ago. The seller worked for Kleeman and they made supercharger kits for Mercedes. All of the 122’s where new old stock they had sitting around for warranty work. He decided to unload them since they had just been sitting around. A friend of mine and I both bought one and got them for a really good price. Then superchargers online found out about them and bought the remaining stock and jacked the price way way up.

I did the 112 to 122 swap myself on both blowers. I painted mine black and left his silver.

As a welder of 15 years, I appreciate the effort. But I never cared for pie cuts when prebent mandrel sections are available so cheap.
