In the middle of head swap on ls7.. using ARP bolt kit.. did the recommended sequence to 80lbs.. do i check torque on these? I checked one and it was a tiny turn to 80lbs..

3 steps, 25, 50, then 80 in sequence..


So the inside bolts wont be 80lbs when the last(outside) bolts are 80lbs? makes sense.. im no engineer, im a checker, double triple checker..

Should also add im using a verified snap-on digi techwrench.. pretty cool you can watch the torque as you approach your number..

Do the 3 steps once you get to the 80 go over the sequence at 80 until there is no movement on any fasteners. Usually takes 3-4 passes at 80 to get to no movement.
I think that’s what your asking.

I really like the ac delco inline torque wrench. Couldn’t believe how much the standard torque wrench would change depending on how you hold and apply force.

Ya definitely, thats why i was wanting to check the 80 pass.. im using my left arm, pushing(started on drivers side, engine is in the car).. pas side will be right arm pulling so much different

Trying to hit the value, slowly, and in one movement (hunched over the engine), holding everything in line somewhat.. definitely see room for error

It's not uncommon to have an inner bolt or stud for that matter that needs a re-torque so just go throught the enitre sequence again after final torque to make sure they're 80 ft lbs. ARP has the torque specs on a sheet of paper that's folded up behind the fastener lube.

You should ALWAYS double check your first and second passes. As you tighten the bolts in sequence, others will loosen. So go over each bolt at least twice in sequence.
I guarantee you will see that your center 4 bolts are no to spec as you finish 7,8,9,10.
This is a big problem using OE head bolts. Initially the 22lbs-ft, then as you finish the last 4 you go back and check them all. I typically see the first 4 at about 16-18, which results in incorrect torque during TTY. Granted you can't recheck a TTY angle, but the initial torque is critical
Same as ARPs or any head bolt being tightened in sequence

And don't have 100% faith in ARP either, I've had a few break or stretch before even hitting the specified torque. Hence my favorite shirt.
