Default How do I know what 5.3 I have?

I bought a GMC Sierra that came factory with a 4.8 motor but someone swapped in a 5.3 and i plan on rebuilding and camming the motor. How can I figure out what vehicle the motor originally came from so I can find internal parts that fit. The stamped numbers on the block are 4.8/5.3 and 12567399.

If they put the ecm that came with that motor in truck you can pull vin eith odb2 reader and check it online.

Did this for my motor, mine came with ecm but wasnt positive even then if it was correct vin. But it was pretty easy since its a Z code vin.

Z code came with the high flow injectors and return fuel system and mine had all that.

Pulled vin up online and it pulled up the Tahoe it came out of at copart.

Probably other ways to verify but this is what I ended up doing.

Put a scope camera down a spark plug hole to see if the pistons are dished or not. Dished = 5.3 liters. Around here, only the GM dealers seem to require the VIN to buy parts - usually the last eight digits. Every other auto parts store most of the time has little need for a VIN.
