Default Budget 5.3 L33 build for 944 swap.

One of our guys has a 20 y/o son starting to build cars and learning the trade. He got into his savings and picked up a clean 1983 944 with a locked up 2.5 four cylinder on marketplace for $2600 and a L33 long block with 163k miles for $500. The goal is to make 3X the horsepower of the original engine - so between 369-382 whp. Dad donated an old Eps 226/234 112 + 2 .600 lift cam (similar to Sum-8707R1) and LS6 intake to the cause.

The plan was to fit the Sum-174005 PAC .630 Beehives to the heads, but the old lifters are dicey, so the heads came off. They took the 799’s to Total Engine Airflow for Beadblasting, Competition Valve Job/blend and whacked them .030. This will net 11.0 compression with a Cometic .040 gaskets. The heads aren’t bowl ported but the results are good for $619! They went from 250 to 266 Intake and 195 to 206 Exhaust at .500. Strong gains in the .400 to .600 region with back-cut stock 2.000/1.550 valves. We’ll update the post as progress is made.

A transaxle out of a 944 Turbo would be a good addition if you can find one. Stronger, and it has longer gearing.

Yes, that is definitely going to be a plus. Right now the 20 year old 205 Radial TA’s are a fuse, but that’s not always going to be the case.
