Newby to LS world with oil pan question
Hello! I am new to the LS world, I know, late to the game. I have been restoring SBC projects for years, and it's now time to get with the new technology. Anyway, I purchased a 2009 DOD 6.0 engine to do a swap in my wifes 65 GMC truck. I talked with Holley about a short oil pan that would clear everything, and they recommended a 302-3, which I purchased one on Ebay. When I went to mock it up last night, the oil pickup tube keeps the oil pan up .400" above the block, that's without a gasket. Is it possible that the timing cover, where the oil tube bolts to internally is taller on the truck DOD engine than a Camaro/Corvette cover? Is that why this doesn't fit? Any help would be much appreciated!

you need a pickup for the motor that pan is supposed to go on....pickups are specific to their corresponding pans....
Did that pan come with a tube? I wonder if you need to swap oil pumps....

Yes, that pickup tube came with the pan. The tube is nearly touching the windage tray cover that is over the main caps, so it can't come down much more. I am not familiar enough with these engines to know if that cover can be removed, or what needs to be changed. ie oil pump, timing cover, etc.

I'll explain LS Engines..
The Oil Pumps, Front & Rear Covers, and bottom of the Blocks are all the same measurements. Every one of them, no difference in "height".
What does change is the Oil Pan depth and shape, and that changes the Oil Tube height and shape as well because it needs to reach the bottom of the sump to get the oil into the Oil Pump.
You have the wrong tube.
The Tubes that sit closer to the Block for the shallower Oil Pans will hit the front portion of that full length Windage Tray so you'll cut it down a hair to clear it.

This might be because it’s a eBay part if it’s installed correctly. Sometimes it pays to buy a name brand part vs know-off. How about a side profile pic showing the elevation of the pickup tube? Some times putting the pan isn’t as simple as it sounds. Since you bought it off eBay, compare the supplied pick up tube with a picture of an actual Holley 302-3 part.

Thanks for all the advice, I removed the windage tray and reinstalled the pickup tube. The pan fits perfectly, it was interferrence with the windage tray, even though the tube bolted right up to the oil pump. I appreciate all the wisdom here!

I guess now if I can ever talk my Dad into getting rid of the 305 v6 boat anchor in his 64 gmc, I know what oil pan to use. An entire ls powertrain swap would be cheaper and easier than just swapping a decent transmission behind the original motor.

An actual Holley 302-x oil pan comes with a very explicit set of instructions about all of this - especially the cutting down of the windage tray to get things to fit. Making ABSOLUTELY sure that your oil pump o-ring is seated properly (to prevent sucking air) can only be done with my pinky fingers - its all a tight fit around that location.

GM Muscle Car Pan has the ideal shape for a truck, I've done a couple.
