Default Help With New Camshaft.

Hi ls1 tech guy, can anyone tell me if it is essential to put cam grease on my new camshaft before I put it in my brand new pre 1985 gm crate motor?

If it is a flat tappet camshaft you need to use the break in lube that is USUALLY supplied with the new cam. You need to also use engine oil that has the correct amount of sulfur and zinc to protect the cam loves fro failure.

Believe it or not, most diesel oils have cut back for emissions reasons also, so they are not what they used to be ither.

rotella, citgard, good stuff or not? any kind of additive to add to the oil of choice?

Don't mean to hijack but can regular oil be used once the cam is broken in?

Yeah once the cam is broken in i would run a good synthetic blend, but until then use a good additive or a special oil. Todays oil is really slick and is devoid of most all the additives it used to have due to all manufacturers swapping to all roller valvetrains.

Bullshit, if you do in depth research, syn blend is nothing special and there are only a few REAL full synthetic oils (Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Redline...) unfortunately castrol isnt even full synthetic. You can buy the additive and you can buy the correct oil from a dealer like GM, but if you want me to ask my buddy, he used to run a specific oil for the flat tappet cam he used, i go roller or nothing.

Fine, run some ******* Supertech in it then, see if i care. I run nothing but Mobil 1 full synthetic in everything I own, but some people dont like spending $50 an oil change. Sometimes i run V8 vegetable drank in it though, but then again all my cars are v8 powered

Oh and Zane, I dont even use a cam in my car so i dont worries about my **** going flat on break-in. I use a pneumatically actuated valvetrain with aerospace technolgy in every area, and alien technology in my ecu and exhaust. I also use custom oil made by Abraham Lincoln right before he died, Im only have 2 barrels left though

Use assembly lube on the cam when installing it.

Valvoline VR1 Racing oil + a bottle of EOS

Follow break in precedures on the first startup.

i use sae 30 nd oil for break in and yes, use cam assembly lube and use it all on every lobe and journal for the bearings. i have built many motors and broken them in this way and have never wiped a cam lobe. run it like that for a couple days and change to what ever type oil you prefer after break-in.

what brand of Non-Detergent (ND) oil do you use?
Is it classified as an API-SA/SB/SC oil?
what's you're reason for using a non-detergent oil for break-in?

also curious on the non-detergent reasoning.
