Default Tilton starter bad?

Today I went to start my s10 for the first time but of course I had problems. First I didnt have power in the body but I did in the engine. Got that solved and try to crank it and it just clicks. I threw the jump pack on there and fit it again and it clicked followed by a bunch of smoke from the starter and/or starter wire. The wire is just the stock wire, what is the AWG recommendation for a Tilton starter? Once I got the smoke cleared out of the garage I took a closer look and it didnt look like any of the insulation on the wire had melted though it was still hot to the touch. It actually looked like the starter its self was the source of the smoke. I got the starter used off a guy on here and assumed it was good, What could have caused this? Should I get a larger wire from the power point to the starter and try cranking it again or do something more?
