Thumbs up Cam for 427 SBC

I recently blew up my 355 due to the connecting rod failing (stock powder rods), NOT DETONATION! The cam I was running was 562/571 248/258 @.050 112lsa. I was running the GM Vortec Bowtie 215cc heads. I recently purchased a GM Bowtie block that will be stroked 4 inches and bored 4.125 inches, 427 cubic inches. I was thinking of running the same heads and cam, but I was told to go bigger with the cam. The last time I went with a bigger cam the car went slower and the motor seemed less efficient. I'm running nitrous like the last setup. 200 shot tops. I have a bigger cam that was going to go in a lighter car, but now I have it to use. The specs are 688/715 282/292@.050 110lsa+5. Does this cam seem too big for my setup? Should I run the old cam? Will I make 650HP N/A? I want to run in the 9's this year.

the second cam is definately more aggressive, but the key question is will this car be driven on the street? the more aggressive cam isnt far off of the cam i run in my 486 BBC, and there is no way in hell i can drive it far on the street. it all depends on your combination too, like what stall? what rear gears? what trans? tire size? theres more to selecting a cam than just heads and internals. you could have the craziest cam in the world but if your combo isnt right as you stated it would simply not be as efficient as a smaller cam.

I would go w/ something in between like 252/258-630/630 that way you are still reasonable.

I don't know what stall to go with. The stall I have now is 4500, 4.56 gears, 29 inch tire, 700r4 tranny. The car does weigh 3850 with me in it so it is a boat. The old setup on nitrous would go to 5800 with a 125 shot and I would shift at 6800. I do like the smaller cam because the engine will be very efficient, I could run a tight converter 3000 stall, and it would be retarded on nitrous. It would be a very low rpm engine. I figure the bigger cam will have a power band from 4500-7800. The compression will be 12.5:1. I will drive this on the street to local cruise nights, maybe to the racetrack 15 miles away on the highway. I've been doing it for years. I'm going to need a different converter especially with more power. I was going to run the converter I have for now and later get a converter for nitrous once I get it tuned N/A.

i would go with the smaller cam and a tighter stall for nitrous tbh, and especially if you cruise on highway. that 4500 stall has to be rediculous on the highway. first gear is nasty in those 700r4s, but they just dont handle the power unfortunately. i broke 5 of them in my nova b4 i gave up and got a th400. i had it fully belt, kevlar, reverse manual, the whole 9 yards, with a manual lock up converter. it was amazing with that OD on the highway, and with the manual lock up it acted like a stick car after 1st i can dig up some pics of the broken ones for ya i never ever broke the internals, i just kept demolishing the cases. but i also put it to a 486 BBC

I would call cam motion, comp cams, camshaft inovations, and have them give me there rec. and for the motor I would use a 3.85 stroke instead of the 4.00. I have a 434ci and my cam specs are dur@.050 I 270 E280 lift I .688 E .670 on a 110 lobe sep.

I would run the one you had in the 355. It should work pretty good with the spray with the 112 LSA and 10 degrees more on the exh lobe. The other cam you mention would be way big in your car because of the weight. Even with a nitrous converter it should still run pretty stout on motor.

I wouldn't go much bigger if any at all. Those bowtie heads flow curve probably levels off right around .600 so its not necessary to go bigger. Plus the longer stroke will love low end torque because of the longer lever arm but it wont like to rev or hold rpms as long I wouldn't be comfortable anywhere above 8k if it wasn't perfectly balanced. The bigger cam will want 9k plus with the set up and will be alot of overall travel compared to a bigger bore and a smaller stroke.

THe first cam sounded like a great choice.
