Default 454 block question

Are there good blocks and weak blocks that gm made. I have heard that some blocks are thinner, anything to this?

Not exactly, the "bad" blocks were really just the smal cube motors and the newer blocks that do not have huge aftermarket support like the old ones.

bad blocks have cracks in them from slung rods etc., other than that no problem with a 454. build it with good parts and you will be fine.

I have been told the 70's blocks are the ones you want and a early 70's is even better. I just sold my 1970 .060 over block for $75.

to my knowledge and my reasearch if the 454 block has the stamping on the back of the block saying "Hi Perf Pass" it is usually a high nickel block which is suppoed to be stronger than others

Mine had that and I was told that it really just meant that it came out of a car and not a truck and that the casting year was more important.

Correct, it is "High Performance Passenger Car" basically.

Is building a newer one. The nice thing about the newer ones is hydraulic roller cams and the gen VI they moved the oil galley up next to the camshaft so 4.370 stroke with out any grinding.
