Default Which heads for 400 sbc?

Which head would be the best all around performer for under $1500? Mainly I've been looking at either Patriot or AFR but I'm really open to suggestions.

I forgot to add, I was looking at the 195 AFR's or the 225 Patriot's.

Bang for the buck, Patriot, higher price but outstanding performer, AFR.

What would the difference be in power between the two?

Well, the Patriot heads are great, especially for the price, but AFR is top notch and will edge out the Patriots by a bit, is it enough to spend extra money on....i dont think so, but others say differently.

Nope, a 210 cc runner is the minimum for a 400 if you want to get peak power.

The 210s will make more peak power but the195s will have more low endand better throttle response corect? How much of a power difference is between the 210s and 195s?

I've ran both Patriots and AFR's. AFR's all the way. I'm not saying Patriot heads are bad by any means, it's just that they don't flow as good or make as much power as the AFR's. Look at the flow numbers across the board. The smaller port 195 AFR's wipe out the 225 port Patriot at anything under .500lift. Peak lift numbers are overrated. It's at midlifts .200-.500 is where the power is made.

I vote for AFR 210 Race Ready's for a 400ci at minimum. You really will lose nothing vs the smaller 195 port.

My 385ci in the boat runs the AFR 190's and at 6000rpms its all the heads can handle. If I was going to spin it higher I would need more headflow.

What would the compression ratio be with flat tops and the 65 cc chamber? Is there any way I could bleed off enough compression to make it run on pump gas?

sorry to jump in this thread but i did a search on the web and this came up! i have a 73 240z witha sbc conversion and a whole bunch of fabed up stuff but any way i took my motor out and got some 225 patriot's 208/160 (flow 300) and want to build a high compression 355 motor (010 block), does anyone know what good reliabe cheap bottom end combo there is out there that would match these heads, this is my first build! i want some decent pistons and rods and im using straight race gas so i know i want some high compression pistons rods and maybe ill use my stock crank or do i need a aftermarktet one??? thanks
