Default Questions about a 305 4bbl

Ok so to start this off....
My family has a '87 with a 305/4bbl, it was originally my mom's and was passed onto me. I quit usuing it because it kept over heating, come to find out due to thermostat, and they eneded up getting me a 04 mustang v6. Well i now have an 02 z28 that but we since i have a sister that is about to turn 16 we are looking to possibly get this back up and running for her birthday in december. So here are my question....
-What would you suggest as far as giving the motor a little freshening up?
- I know having the carb redbuilt is probably needed as well as changing out the thermostat and what not. I've also read something about vortec heads...
-What kind of exhaust, headers back, would you reccommend?
- Nothing to extravagent, i tried putting on a muffler when i had the vehicle but they said the pipes were to rusted to weld to.
-I was wanting to put a mild cam in there but i have no idea where to look for one for that kind of motor?

Here is a great little combo for that car, if you thinking about going with a vortec head combo:

I realize that it's for a TBI car, but tone down the cam a little, and skip the porting on the heads, should still be a decent runner. Also, get the exhaust redone if it's rusted that badly. Exhaust leaks are not a good thing.

- the usual tune up, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, oil change

- yeah the vortec heads are pretty good, though i often hear about people porting and polishing them. obv not as good as vortec heads but still a little better.

-as far as headers i have the hooker shorties, 2055 i believe. some people go with hedmans. then exhaust is really your choice, a flowmaster cat-back or even the hooker cat-back is used often.

-Comp xe256h cam is a popular choice for a spirited daily driver
