What is the cause of it and how is it fixed on a 79 sbc 350?

How can you tell the crank is walking back and forth? A worn thrust bearing can cause this, but I doubt you would be able to see it. What are your symptoms?

A engine with allot of power and a automatic with a converter that doesnt have a anti ballooning plate can cause wear like that.

A manual tranny with a high spring pressure clutch will cause it also.

I had a Pontiac harmonic damper walk about 1/4 inch once. Ended up being a broke crank. Snapped in clean in 1/2.
