Default can I just swap out pistons?

so can I? what info do i need if I want to do this? I want to swap out my low comp pistons for some flat tops to gain some much needed compression. Until I can afford a full rebuild that is.

Yes you can as long as they are the same bore size and made for that stroke and rod

What about pin on or press fit pins? is there a way to know what I have before I order the new ones without taking it apart?

If its a stock shortblock you can look up the specs on it. Other than that you would have to take it apart

Mat want to check the weight between the 2 as it may require a balance job as well.

Check the bore as it might need to be enlarged if there is a taper, otherwise, a hone and some more STD pistons will work well after a balance job, unless they can be cut to match the weight of the stock pistons.

I was thinking about the balancing as well. At that rate I might as well just wait and do it right and do it once. I dont plan on going all forged or anything super expensive so I should just wait a liitle longer so I dont have to pull it all out twice.
