Default Starter help

Can anybody tell me what this is about:

Basically when I first start up my car there is a spinning sound but nothing engages. After a bit it will finally hook up and the crank. Then sometimes it sounds as its getting caught on something so then I don't know. I was told to try WD40 on the starter.

i can't see your pics at the moment,
but it sounds like the solenoid on the starter is not working. It's a plunger which pushes the starter pinion out to engage the flywheel.
it's part 17 that moves part 18, when that solenoid goes bad you generally can't replace just that, you have to get a new starter. Using wd40 won't do anything.
All you ever need to do on the starter is get the rust and buildup out of the endcap (#4) and clean the armature if it has crud built up on the commutator, and grease the planetary gears which are almost always dry (#7)

Dang.. that sucks. I just got this starter before I stored it for winter. Sigh.
