Are you sure the plugs wires are on the right plugs? You have the timing leads hooked to the right #1? Obvious questions, but sometimes you just over look stuff.

relatively speaking, for idle, more timing leaner mixture, less timing richer mixture.

if you're advancing timing from 6 deg BTDC to 8... to 10... and to 12 dBTDC and it cuts out that can be from too rich a mixture, it's igniting too soon, creating too much cylinder pressure before piston gets to TDC and engine stalls. Simple correction is lean out the idle mixture. This is assuming you don't have other problems causing it... bad valves seats, poor compression, or improper lifter preload.

Your outer ring might have slipped on the hub of the balancer. What you need to do is find top dead center by pulling the #1 plug.

Might be very weak valve springs. If you already checked all the obvious, time to do a compression and leak down check on it. Or maybe your timing chain jumped a tooth. How many miles are on it? How does it exactly run? Did this just happen all the sudden or did it get gradually worse? Have you tried a different timing light?

Well. Could be a sloppy chain. But also the mechanical timing in the dist could be stuck open. Make sure your not running a full time vacuum to the dist

Wonder if you got it a tooth off? It will still run but poorly. And you can't get it timed.

Mechanics can still make mistakes no matter how many they put on! If he just eyeballed it, it's possible he got it a tooth off. If he used a straight edge to line it up, then we need to start looking elsewhere.

Do you have one of those adjustable vac. advance cans on the "dizzy"? You might wanna check that out, it might be advanced really high...
