Exclamation the big decision

hey guys, i want your advice, im really confused in choosing a block for drag racing, car is malibu 1980, i dont know whether a big block or small block, i want it to be the powerful as posible, only drag use, block will be from dart blocks, SB stroker i found it is 440 CID and BB something like 598 CID what's your opinion considering all advantages and disadvantages from both, car weight, traction issues, prices, overall what do you think? i'd go for bb

just throwing these out there

430 hp 383 sb for 7600

http://www.jegs.com/i/Blueprint-Engi...oductId=761275

OR

640 hp 509 bb for 10k

http://www.jegs.com/p/Blueprint-Engi...21866/10002/-1

these are fully dressed engines. $19.84 per hp for the small block or $19.64 per hp for the big block. So per hp its cheaper to build a bb.

WE built my wife a 489 for her 71 Camaro for less.

$2500 for an Ohio Crank rotation assy
$2500 for Brodix heads
$700 for headers
$400 for a carb
$1200 for a Bullet roller cam kit
plus all the little things that add up

Yea, 8k is a decent price.

of course, we already had a block that was .030 over and the intake. and a few odds and ends.

I'm talking about a engine with the same parts as this one.
What HP does it make?

If I was to take a wild guess, it would be in the 600 to maybe 650 range. We have the oval port big brodie heads on it and only about 10.5:1 comp. 4340 crank and rods from Ohio Crankshaft and JE pistons, bullet solid roller at .685 lift and 255/265 at .050. Holley 1000 HP series carb. Need a looser convertor. Has a 10" in it now , need a 8" 4200 stall. 2800 only lugs the engine down.

I should have gotten a larger Carb but it was suppose to be a street setup so I went with the 950. With dominator it should be closer to 760hp tuned correctly.10.7:1 compression. Cam has 705 lift 266/274 @ .050 105 lsa
Never put it in my car though I ran out of funds to restore the car so I have to sell it.

Gonna part it out I guess can't seem to sell it complete.

This is the part that I hate.

My 68 Firebird made it thru a marriage, buying a house, adopting my wifes son, having a second child, a divorce, and a second marriage. Guess I got lucky.

Go big big block.

If it's going to see the street at all I'd go with a 540 before the 632.
