L31 383 balancer question. So I don't know where else to turn but here....so I purchased a 1996 L31 350 longblock that was unfinished. It has had a 383 stroker conversion done to it but has not been finished. For good measure, I stripped it back down to clean it and check other peoples work and I'm needing the flexplate and balancer.
I have it at the machine shop and he says he needs a balancer and flexplate, now Eagle tells me I need any 305/350 flexplate but a balancer from a 400(external), my question is that the OEM balancer is 8" X 2 1/4"wide and the 400 balancers are 8" (+/-.010) X 2 3/8" wide.
Is that extra 1/8" critical to the serpentine belt setup or is it just longer on the shank.
What balancer have you 383 external balanced guys used?

BTW, this is not for strip use, but rather a replacement for weak 350 in my old '97 tow vehicle.

I don't think anyone makes a direct bolt on deal for that, i.e. a correct thickness external balance damper for use with the crankshaft sensor reluctor ring (which is the reason the 350 balancer is shorter). You will probably need to machine the hub of the 400 damper down so that it's the same height as the 350 one. That will let it seat correctly. Dude must have messed up buying his parts and must not have gotten a Vortec stroker kit which reuses the 350 flywheel and damper. I assume you had the part number for the rotating kit which is why Eagle gave you that recommendation?
