Default Stroke and sound of an engine

I have a question that I have been wondering for a while. How much difference does the sound change depending on the stroke. Will a 383 sound crazy than a 327 takin into consideration that they have same compression cams etc... Anything helps

Some common bore and stroke SBC combos for a factory block:

DZ302 - 4" bore x 3" stroke
327 - 4" bore x 3.25 stroke
350 - 4" bore x 3.48 stroke
383 - 4" bore x 3.76 stroke

As you can see they all have the same bore. Generally, the smaller stroke will allow more rpm. The DZ 302 with the right heads and cam will make the same hp as the 383 but at 1500rpm higher. The 383 is simply the cheapest way to get the hp at the lowest rpm.

One of the magazines recently did a modernized DZ 302 with afr 210 heads and made 519hp @ 7400 rpm. The rotating assy was nothing special.

Engine sound is based on the amount of air moving through the engine (and exhaust), the exhaust system, and the camshaft.

I want to point out that while a 302 can make as much HP as a 350 or 383, it has a much lower peak TQ number and being high revving will need a really high stall converter and big gears to get moving. That said, area under the curve is less and all things being equal, the 383 motor will be way more streetable and should be faster in a race than an equivalent car with a 302.

BTW a 383 is typically a 4.030" bore and a 3.75" stroke, 377 is a 4.00 bore and 3.75" stroke.

Cam and exhaust is where the sound will come from. You can also tell a well running clean engine from your normal crap build.

well, same duration on different engines seems to make a bit of a difference from what i have been told.. not sure how true it is, but i was told that my XS282 camshaft would sound a lot more mild on a 383 than my 327, kind of make sense if you think about it.. but takes me a lot longer to get into good power range as well.. like 3400 compared to maybe 2600-2800 on larger CU in.

The Dz 302 was pretty impressive when wound up but doggy as hell at lower RPM.
The same cam in a 350 sounded milder and had decent drivability around the street.

I did a 355 to 383 literally everything stayed the same. same style crank, rods and pistons, same block. I only changed the stroke, thats it. same compression, same top end. same vehicle, same exhaust.

it did not change the sound at all. It made more power though.

Cubes eat duration. So the same cam in different engines can sound different with idle but that's about it, but it would take a hundred cubes to notice with the ears. A 240/250 duration cam @.050 with a 110 LSA in a 305 would sound pretty radical, in a 400, it would sound a bit more tame. But just barely noticeable.

I had the same speed pro cam cs1014r in a sbc 327 and a sbc 350 it seemed like the 350 had a nicer smooth idle and less raspy tone

Lets not forget about valve size. Was told by my builder that the bigger valve (2.055) we put in was worth 15* duration. Here is an idle vid of my 396 stroker(4.030x3.875). I think it sounds clean but any tuning advise is highly welcome.. 2-1/2" w/x Dynomaxes all the way out. Holley 300-110 dart platinums 206cc 81cc int/exh ports. 72cc chamber. Qf 830ss. Custom ground comp billet roller(mechanical). 232@.050, .630. Lol yeah it's got air shocks there. Runs pretty decent I guess for almost 3800#. Went to 3 different tracks last year and drove it about 100 miles/week. Ran what I think is decent times for an antique street tire street car.

What causes the low tone of your average big block exhaust?

Big valves. Big primary header tubes, big exhaust pipes, no catalytic converter...
