sbc in a 1997 camaro
the car will be strictly drag and should be in low 9's in a 1/4 so as far as street legal im not concerned about, but the questions I do have if anybody has done this before or know anything about it are these :
what ignition system did you run ? was msd 6-al enough?
what fuel system ?
what cutting needs to be done?
what aftermarket cross member was the best deal?
was you able to use motor mounts and enough room for motor against the firewall ?
im sure ill have a thousand more questions but any help and pics would be appreciated...
thanks !!
what ignition system did you run ? was msd 6-al enough: I have a MSD digital 6-al in my car along with a Blaster ss coil, We use this exact setup on the dirt race team I work for and most of the cars are making 800+ horsepower and run fine. We currently have that setup on 17 cars right now
what fuel system: I am using the stock in tank pump that I wired to a toggle switch and used a Holley 12-841 bypass regulator to take the stock 50 pounds of fuel pressure down to 7.5. I got -6an feed and return line and a -8an line going from the regulator to the carb. I got earls hardline to an adapter fittings on the stock lines coming from the wheel well and it worked perfect.
what cutting needs to be done: I only thing I had to cut out was the section of cowl under the passenger side wiper blade and the section under it t gain clearance for my distributor. I have a twin pickup sb2 distributor in my car and it sits a little lower than a pro billet msd distributor would. I put the section that I cut out back in place after I got the motor in and I still had about a inch between the top of the distributor cap and the underside of the cowl but it would have been impossible to work or do anything under there. Once you put the stock plastic trim panels back on the car you cant even tell that anything was cut.
what aftermarket cross member was the best deal: I myself used the stock cross member just because I didn't have the extra funds for a aftermarket one but if I were to do it BMR makes some killer ones! The stock lt1 motor mounts only allow you to use 2 of the 3 bolts to mount the motor to the mounts where as the BMR ones give you all 3 bolts
was you able to use motor mounts and enough room for motor against the firewall: This one I dont really have a answer for, I see in some of the pictures that a bunch of people went the motor mount direction.
Also, for my car to use my existing t-56 transmission I had to get a specific early sbc to lt1 t-56 flywheel to mate everything up correctly, Not sure what has to be done to get the powerglide hooked up to it or if its a simple process. Just do your homework and it wont be a very bad swap, I started my swap about 5 months ago and have been working on it a bunch lately and it has gone very smooth. If you have any other questions let me know and I will try to help. Here is a link to my build, Hopefully it helps!!
