Default Was I scammed? first car experience

Im new to the forum and always find great information here. A little about me im 22 and active duty coast guard. I live in Charleston SC and moving to annapolis md soon. Last year I bought a 1983 buick regal with the following 355 cam is about dur 240 .540 lift (I think its a custom grind). 11:1 afr 190 ported head victor jr intake 850 holly forged piston and Gorilla rods, the trans is a glide with a brake. Out back I have strange 33 spline axles with 456 spool. Bought it with time slips from a days before it ran 7.2 in the 1/8 no juice ( does have a 200 shot plate set up). Last season I took it to english town and ran a constant 12.8 at 108. Only changes I made between buying it and track were 40's flow masters. Over the winter I took it to the shop and was told one of the distributor wires was burnt so I replaced them with msd 8.5 and new spark plugs and royal purple 5w 30. Checked the timing and the car had 8 degrees taken out and when the trans was pulled it has a nitrous custom puck converter (stalls at 4k on brake). My question is could the mufflers, a burnt wire and the timing make that much of a difference in time slips? Maybe he motor swapped? What do you think this combo should run? Car is 3100 with me in it. When I did run the car I shifted at 6500 rpm because I dont know the exact cam specs. Or what I should shift at. Next up will be a carb I think between the convter and such a big carb drowning it im going slower.

I would look at the timing first, 8 degrees taken out is a lot. What is total timing now? The converter was built for nitrous, so it will be tight just running NA. That coupled with a glide will kill your 60' time. If you're not gonna spray it anytime soon, get a looser converter. And as you mentioned, a smaller carb definitely. I would think it should be an 11 sec car on motor with the right carb and converter. A 3 speed trans would help too, not sure how much you wanna change it up.

Total 37* timing. As for the carb what size would you recommend? I bet I can trade it. As for the glide I plan on building this 454 I have so it may come in handy would love to run 10.0s with it.
thanks for your input

I would put the 8 degrees back in it and see what it does. This car should be a low 12 high 11 second car if it really does have the mods you listed.

A 4000 stall isn't that tight. I would leave that alone for right now. Leave the trans alone too. With the 1.76 or 1.82 1st gear you have in the glide you are going to need those 4.56's to get the car moving. If you put a 3 speed in there you will run out of motor before you get to the end of the track. Plus changing that over would require another shifter, driveshaft, and converter. I say keep the glide.

Take those choke master mufflers off of there too. They were ok for their time but you need a better muffler. Look at some bullets for it since they are lighter and this isn't a car you will driving as a daily driver so it can afford to be a little loud. As for carb, a good 750 tuned for you motor will most likely wake this car up.

Just an FYI you can run 10.0's with what you have on the juice.

A 750 carb would be more than enough. Changing the converter too would get you the best results with this combo.

Changing the converter would help but then when it comes time to spray, you will blow thru the converter.

If it ran 7.2 and with the previous owner, you might want to ask him where he shifted at.

The rev limiter pill in the msd is 7800 rpm. Theres so much guess work I think a dyno is going to be the next thing. Ive honestly never run down the track with juice before so im skeptical.
Thanks again guys
