Do you know what compression youre running? Is this the original transmission that came with the car? 650 sounds a little small for the size of engine you have.

I built a 496 for my friends 1971 Monte. It has stock oval ports (049). The combustion chambers were huge (121cc). I milled them as far as we could go (110cc) and purchased some small dome pistons. That gave us just shy of 12:1 compression. It has a Comp XE 274 camshaft. It has some decent guts, loves an 850 double pumper, needs a good bit of timing (initial and total). If you are low on compression, small carb, not enough timing, etc...I can believe it is a turd. especially with those big tires, 3.73 gears and a stock converter!
