350 vortec with cc306
I just purchased a cc306 comp cam for my 66 nova. The motor is a rebuilt 350 vortec from a 96 truck. I have a lt 4 hot cam in it now. The motor is stock with a lt4 hot cam, ghetto grind on the retainers, and z28 valve springs with 120lbs spring pressure at stock installed height it still has 1.5 rockers. My car ran a best of 11.77 @ 113 at 3000 pounds. Does the cc 306 have a choppy idle and will it improve performance. Any other suggestions are appreciated thanks

It should outrun the hot cam, but you will have to spin the motor higher. Make sure you get the correct springs and purchase lightweight retainers and good pushrods if you can afford them. Spring clearance with the vortec heads is an issue (as you know) so keep an eye on that.

Thanks I just ordered a set of Alex's spring and retainer kits. Claims up to .550 lift, 130lbs seat pressure and 244@ .050 duration. Designed for the stock vortec heads. I'm under the impression that the cc306 does not have a very aggressive lobe.

I had that cam in my L98 with AFR heads and a miniram. It made best power up around 6500RPM. I switched to a custom 236/242@.050 cam on a 109LSA and it ran circles around the CC306. I agree with you that the CC306 is a milder lobe. It has a lot of duration though, so it wants some RPM. It should run pretty good!

How was the idle with the cc306. The lt4 hot cam in the engine sounds stock. Also do you know if the stock roller lifters and self guided rockers will accommodate the cc306. I shifted the hot cam at 6000 rpm. 6500 rpm shouldn't be a problem for the motor.
