Default 283 Build. Opinions welcome.

Hey guys. I am in the process of building a 283 for a friend. I dont have a lot of experience with a little small block so let me know what you think. Let me start by saying this engine has sentimental value for this gentleman so please leave out the 350 comments. Thanks in advance.

Going in a a 1964 C10.
Trans is 700r4 with a 2300-2500 rpm lockup converter. Probably will end up with 3.73 or lower rear gear.

Originally was going to bore to 4in with a 327 crank but after sonic checking it was a little to close for a street engine.

Engine
283 block bored .080 with flatops. New pistons were .045 in the hole so the block was decked to .005 in the hole.
Align honed and rods resized. Crank is 10/10.
ARP hardware on the bottom end and headstuds.
.036 compressed mls gaskets for a .041 quench.
Double roller chain.
High volume oil pump.
305 ho heads cleaned up with good springs. Unported.
1.5 erson rockers
Measured for correct pushrod length but cant remember exact numbers. Can check the box if anyone is interested.
Comp cams 262H cam installed straight up(kinda big for a 283 but the man wants it).
Edelbrock performer RPM instake.
Edelbrock 600cfm carb
1 5/8s longtubes.
DCR is right at 8 to 1.

Any info on initial carb setup is greatly aprreciated. I will dyno to see what she ends up with as I am just curious.

Thanks for stepping in and let me know what you think.

Sounds like a nice little engine that's built right. My only concern would be the 8-1 compression with the 262H cam. Looking at Comp's catalog, the 256H or 300hp nostalgia cam might be a better choice for that compression. If it's too late for a different cam, maybe run this one advanced if possible?

Good catch. I will probably advance the cam after break in just to see but dynamic might get slightly to high for unpolished iron combustion chambers on pump. A more modest increase in dynamic could be had with a thinner headgaskets around .031-.033 but thats getting a little tight for a street setup. There will be some trial and error for sure.

What is your goal with this engine build?

From what I read it doesnt appear your interested in all out perform but something that is very streetable and reliable. Is this correct?

Need more compression, 9.5-10 would make this combo a high winding beast, port matching the manifold and heads is cheap power on these small motors too.We have a very similar set-up in a 64 stepside with a Muncie and double hump heads, 7k is easy.

If it were my build, I would do one of two things. I would either buy a better set of heads that increased the compression to at least 9:1 or I would run a smaller cam with a 500 cfm carb to keep the motor closer to stock.

I think you'll be disappointed with the power the engine puts out with unported heads and 8:1 compression.

I have a set of the old "Power Pack" heads. Just need cleaning up and some new springs. They came off a 220 horse 283 with a four bbl and Muncie ( 64 Malibu I wish I still had)I live in central Texas. PM me if interested..
