Does anyone build Gen1 283's anymore or do they just go 350?

What the point? Unless you're restoring a numbers matching car why would you want a small displacement when a large displacement bolts in the same place?

I would build a 305 Vortec for that or maybe destroke the 305 Vortec to a 4.3 Vortec with a L99 baby LT1 4.3 crank and rods.

A .030 over block with the 3" stroke crank could use 1.56" compression height generic 305 pistons if you used the 5.94" rods. Vortec block is roller cam equipped and those 305 Vortec heads are the best flowing small chamber Gen1 small block heads you can find. I could see a ~270 cubic inch engine making power to 6,000-6,500 rpm with a small cam. Probably get 300-320 hp out of ot. Zero deck the block and get as much compression as you can. Put like a 390 cfm 4bbl Holley on it on a dual plane manifold.

if you have a 283 keep the crank find a "870" or other small journal 327 block and you can make a high revving 302 like they used in the 67-68 Z28 (69 was a large journal) put a nice set of heads on it and a good cam have a blast!!!!
