Default GM Crate engines??

Hey guys, anyone here used the GM replacement engine for the 96-98 full size trucks? I see they offer 2 different Vortec headed motors. One is listed as a standard replacement with 2 bolt mains while the other is listed as a HD version which comes with 4 bolt mains and I believe different hardened exhaust valve seats.

This motor would be going in a daily driver with occasional towing. Question is should I just stick the stock 2 bolt replacement in or grab the HD? Looking for any feedback from anyone who has bought one of these and installed, hard to beat the price and 3yr 100,000mi warranty. Cheaper than I could rebuild the current motor once I add in machine shop costs.

It really depends on your budget. Both the 2 bolt and 4 bolt versions should be reliable. I had looked at GM crate engines, but I decided to rebuild the 2 bolt main 350 in my '73 Nova and make it a roller motor. I'm glad I did. The Vortec heads are good flowing heads so you should make good power.

According to GM the 2 bolt mains was the stock unit for the 1500 series 1/2 ton trucks while the 2500 series got a 4 bolt main and hardened exhaust seats, I’m guessing for heavier towing application. Both are supposed to be rated same HP/TQ though.

I think that very good warranty only applies if the engine is used in a "suitable" vehicle. So please check the fine print and ask the vendor if your intended vehicle complies for warranty purposes. In fact, I'd get it in writing with an e-mail.

One will go into a 1997 Z71 to replace a old worn out 280k mile motor and the other to go into my 1999 Tahoe to replace a motor that got overheated badly a couple times before it developed a cooling and misfire issue, that motor has 170k miles. So they are direct replacement engines for those trucks and the warranty says it’s will be honored weather it is installed by me or a mechanic, so that a plus too.

What's the price difference between the two options?

Can you take out the engine in out of one of your vehicles and check to see if it has 2 bolt mains or 4 bolt mains? Then you can order the correct SBC crate engine. I will add that rebuilding a SBC is not too difficult if you have time, money, and someone around to help you get things done.

for 100 bucks just rock and roll with the 4 bolt. Slightly over kill for what you are needing but if you ever come to point where you want to sell the trucks, or pull and do something to it for a future project it makes it that much more desirable.

Definitely go with the 4-bolt for $100 more.

Was just informed that the vehicle application effects warranty. If the Vin says it came with a 2 bolt and I buy a 4 bolt for it then I’d only have the 12,000 mile warranty instead of the 100k since it’s technically not the right application. This will definitely effect my decision as this is my daily driver and work truck. If it was a race or off road application I wouldn’t care as much but I want the full warranty length.

well then, guess your decision has been made a lot easier. Go with the warranty!
