Default gear drives

I was just wondering if a gear drive is a problem for a street car? I know it transfers crank vibrations to the cam but I want to know if that would affect the life of a street engine with a good oil system, 'cause I would think if you keep the cam bearings lubricated, there wouldn't be a problem.
Also, I'm not planning on actually doing this, but is there an affordable place to get a blower and/or mechanical injection setup? I know of ebaymaotors and racingjunk.com, but any where else? Shop names are welcome if it's not an outrageous price.
I would like a powerful car to scare the ricers around here , and a loud car so I can't hear the ricers around here.

I've had a few gear drives, from different manufacturers. I only ever had one problem, that was with a 5.0 mustang, I didn't clearance the front seal enough and it put excess pressure on the idler gear, which caused it to fail in about 200 miles. My chevelle has had a "loud" gear drive for about 10 years, NO problem. you will love it, but if you are unsure or can't compare the 2, get a "quiet" set-up, you can still hear it, and on my mustang it sounds like it has a supercharger(kinda)

I agree, Get the quiet drive. My old 434ci s-10 had a noisy drive in it, I could hear over the exhaust but after the GD I couldn't even talk to myself!!

well, I'm gonna be runnin' a stroker 454 with 489ci, solid lifter cam, 3 inch exhaust with 40 series delta flowmasters, and locker rear setup, so noise isn't much of a concern. I kinda want to make more noise than necessary 'cause the ricers around here have no clue and I really want to scare them(literally). But seriously, is a "loud" setup THAT loud?

thanks

as mentioned before.....it sounds like a blower. better make sure you have the power to back it up or your setup will be made with the same mentality as a ricers! understand? personally, i would suggest going with the quiet if you must have one. if you can spend a bit extra, go with an internal belt drive, but really a good double roller will do you just fine and you can put the money elsewhere.

later,
Dave

YES!! your car will sound like a 1000 horsepower methanol dragster. If I could choose again, I would have never put a loud one in my chevelle, if I ever have to go under the front cover again, it's gettin' swapped.

they are noisy IMHO. Some people prefer them, but it seems with some exception that most cars with gear drives are show cars that don't run worth crap. Just my $.02

SAY NO TO A LOUD GEAR DRIVE...worse than a ricer with a fart can...or a gansta with blown out speakers & a 1000 watts of power...Jesel makes the best belt but on a street car, do a double roller and put the money in something else

Okay, quiet setup it is. I thought that a gear drive was only about 100 bucks more than a double roller. For less than 200 dollars I want to go with the best setup available. It's going to be a 10 sec. car, so would that be enough power to back up a quiet GD? The car's going to be mostly for fun for the first couple years, but when I go to college, it's going to be a dailydriver, so I want to be able to tinker with everything(i.e. timing) a few years down the road. That's what got me thinkin' 'bout the whole GD thing in the first place.

I say get the gear drive, I love it just for the sound... just don't get the loud setup, you will regret it.

Gear drives are pointless and serve no purpose in my opinion. A double roller chain will do just fine on your setup and they are alot cheaper. The thing that kills me about gear drives is that you can't hear ****. If your motor is coming apart or making some wierd noises you can't even hear it. And if you do get lucky and hear the wierd noise then the gear drive is so freakin loud that you can't figure out where the noises are coming from. And when a gear drive breaks things can get even messier than when a chain breaks. Loud or Quiet, still no point in spending the extra money on a GB.

If you are gonna build an old street rod that isn't fast but you want it to sound like its got a big bad motor in it then yeah.. go ahead with the gear drive.
