Default 454 SS Pickup

Was the 454 SS Pickup fast? Is it a good canidate for N20? I am getting bored of my Ford Ranger daily driver.

My wife wants to drag race but she aint driving my car.
I am thinking of something like this....

Honestly they weren't that fast. They had what, 255 hp or something? They're nice trucks, but I would go after a Syclone instead.

I like the Syclone but they are more expensive and they are little. I have a little truck now. I would like a full size.

255hp? That aint so bad. Do you think it could take a 200 shot of n20? If I could get it to 400rwhp with poweradder that would be good enough to make the wifey happy at the track and me happy on the way to work

they were pretty slow, although they had a TH400 I believe and should be able to handle some spray. My boss has one with 44 miles on the clock just sitting in his warehouse next to a 91 lightning...

stock they ran in the mid 16's - i ran one at the track with my sonoma and blew the doors off of it. he was very mad.

i think they are @ 8.5:1 cr but they have cast pistons. and the first year was a th375 (cross between a th350 and a th400), later models haad a 4l80e.

i have seen a few with a whipple bolt on kit and they run pretty well.

i would look into the whipple or max 150 shot.

good luck with traction

No wait! True they weren't the fastest or most economical, but with a little help, they can be mean. I would go for it, but would rebuild with decent parts for a medium sized hit. A 200 hit would turn it into an animal.

3 speed automatic with 384 ft lbs of torque...a very good starting point. They can be made fast, but not as easily as a Syclone/Typhoon.

Don't give up yet, they can be made quite mean if you're willing to put the engine work into it.

Hehe. That is the problem. Im not willing to put the engine work to it. I think I will either go Silverado 5.3 or buy someone's SBC or BBC project that they have almost completed and are trying to unload it. I would like to invest 10 to 15k total. Not 10k on a truck that has to be totally rebuilt.

The main thing I learned from this thread is that not all BBC's are the same. This one in particular must be a slug.

My plan is to find something decent and put some spray on it.

Chevy didn't do any planning when they built the 454ss, they just took a stock 454 they had laying around and threw it in a 1/2 ton truck. You can get them to run mid 13's pretty easily, w/ a cam, intake and older BBC head swap, everything under $1000.

Get a 454SS!!!

i have always wanted one of those trucks. like most said, bone stock they suck, but there is more aftermarket parts for them then 5.3Ls. any BBC can make tons of power easy but good gas milage will never happen.

Yeah, the peanut port heads are the biggest drawback on those trucks. A set of 781 or 049's would be the way to go.

Imagine a mild lower compresion 454 SS with forged internals on a turbo, that would be nuts.
