Silverado SS 454
Is there anywhere where I can get info on the Early 90's Silverado SS 454s? This site has some info but I want more info on everything about the truck. Anybody know of any websites? Whenever I do a search I turn up with either the current Silverado SS or a Chevelle SS 454.

Check out www.454ss.com.
The 91-93's came w/ 4L80E's, and the 90's w/ TH-375 (400 tranny w/ 9" tailshaft).
You can get one in pretty good condition for a fair price. Chevy did not put any thought into the engine of our trucks, just put a motor home big block in a 1/2 ton truck, but it's a good foundation. The stock motor has a wimpy cam, restrictive intake, SMALL peanut port heads, and a non-flowing exhaust. Alot of guys use the stock crank and rods, and use the TRW LS6 pistons (10.0:1 compression), older BBC 781 or 049 cast iron heads, an Edlebrock intake manifold, cam, and headers. That'll make a low 13 second truck. The limiting factor is the stock TBI setup, so if you went w/ a carb, or aftermarket EFI like I did, then you can go lots faster.

I would love to take one of those and drop a stroked LS1, leave the factory decals on and do some serious hunting. It would suprise the hell out of lot of people. I test drove a white one years ago when they were new and almost bought one.
BTW - I thought the 4L80E only came out recently within the last couple of years.

The stock throttle body is a limiting factor. There's a member of ours that bores the stock unit out to flow over 900cfm. You can get TunerCat, or AutoProm and tune the stock ecu. No one makes larger injectors though. You can get a truck in the high 12's w/ the stock (bored) TBI.

The stock throttle bodies are 1-15/16" I believe, and flow around 650 cfm or so. One thing that hurts them is that the injectors themselves are a obstruction, but they make a bowl to put in its place htat allows air to flow under them. The stock air cleaners use a riser that really limits air flow. I used a 454 tbi on a small block, and it was okay, but even on a 350 it didnt want to turn past 6000.

Well, with any big block you'll have traction issues.
With the stock leaf springs, Cal-Trac traction bars, and slicks, guys are getting 1.55-1.65 60fts, depending on the combo.
With street tires, traction is really limited, espicially w/ a 13sec, or faster truck.

i am sure he ment the more complicated moving parts are more prone to breakage . those trucks make a bunch of torque , they just run out of steam on top end . mine ran better shifting it about 4700-4800 rpms . anything more than that and it would slow down

I meant w/ the more power you have, more likely you'll break something. I've had my share of stuff breaking. It's hard on parts getting a 4600lb truck to run 11's N/A.
CamaroSF, yeah that pic was at BG. Every year our 454ss club has an annual get together in Bowling Green. It's usually a 3 day event w/ tours of the Corvette Museum and factory, some kind of show N' shine or cruise, then one day we rent the track and go racing. This year we are trying to get a dyno day put together.

They go anywhere from $4500-15000.
A 90' in good condition will go for around $7000-8500. The 91-93's are around $8500-11000.
Check out www.454ss.com for more info and look in the classified's on the forum.
