Question comp cams 292H ?

I have a 385 sm. blk. chevy with the 292H 501/501 lift cam
a torker II intake ,700 cfm carb., gear drive timing set ,1.75" headers, 3000 stall conv.with a 375B trans & 4:56 gears
I have'nt had the opportunity to run the car on the road yet,it sounds really good but I've had two people tell me that these cams do not perform as well as they are advertised.
has anyone had any experience with these cams that can tell me what I should expect?

I've had several. THey are A great cam for A street/strip application. I had a 383/turbo 350 with 4.11 gears in A 3400 lb 86 monte ss that went A best of 12.05 @ 114. This was through 2.5" exhaust on 26.5x11.5 et streets. great cam good choice.

i didnt like mine because of the poppy idle, i switched to a hydraulic roller for a more custom powerband. but its a good cam for the money, the torque drops off at about 5500rpms and the hp is weak most of the way up. nice torquey feel to it though. id get 1 3/4 headers though if i were you. that intake manifold should work well with your setup.

I had one in a 377 (destroked 400) and it had a real nice powerband, the only reason I changed it was I went forced induction, and the 110LSA wasn't good for boost

Actually, I had one in a 10:1 355 with Dart heads, Holley 750, and 1 3/4 Supercomp Hooker headers. It really came alive when I switched to a Victor Jr intake (from a Torker II) and also added 1.6 roller rockers which brought the lift to .534. In my 3640lb Olds Cutlass (GN looking car) on the motor it ran a best of 12.30 and ran 11.61@123mph on a 125 shot. This car was very streetable, and valve adjustments were almost non-existant. This was on a stock shortblock with only forged pistons and ARP rod bolts.

i've heard that the magnum lobes are not very aggressive lobes. Look at the advertised vs @.050 lift, and you'll see. They've got lots of adv so it sounds really choppy, but it doesn't deliver as much as it sounds like it should. But its ok man, you'll be fine, unless you're looking for every last ounce of power.

thats true, Comps' Xtreme Energy cams make more power with the same size cam over the Magnums

We had one on a totally stock 350 with eybrow pistons and all, with a set of Trick flow twisted wedges, and a T350, @ 3300 lbs went 12.70s, I drove it all over and to the track as well.

I've since discovered that track averages 1-2 tenths slower than other tracks in our area.

May not be the Ultimate cam, but it works well.

What heads are you running? I would switch the torker 2 to a RPM or airgap. The torker 2 manifold is very short and the runners have way to much curve in them. I personally prefer the Isky 292 Mega cam. It`s very close to the comp cam but it`s on a 108 LSA and has .505 lift. I`ve seen them run in the low 12`s high 11`s in low compression 383`s with Dart heads.

I had a 292 cam in a 455 pontiac and the car would haul ***. With a 3000 stall I still had to put car in neutral at stop lights for it to idle (sounded awsome though).

I was reading about bretts sbc and was wondering what everyone thought of the combo i have put together. I havent got it all together and dont know what its going to do. 355 forged trw's 9.5-10.0, eldbrock perf rpm angle plug heads, 292h cam, jetted down 850 dp, eldbrock per rpm intake ( thinking of going open plenum). Going to run a t-5, with 4.11s in a stock body vega. Thoughts, suggestions? Thanks

i'm not big on edelbrock heads but other than that you have a pretty well matched combo.

I don't know how it runs but I'm gonna find out. I am in the process of putting together a 383ci Fuelie. Forged Eagle 3.75" crank with 6" Hbeam rods and SRP flattops running 10.25-1 compression and I got some Edelbrock E-Tec 200 heads and a Holley Stealth Ram FI set up with the 292XFI cam retro roller lifters and some pro mag full roller rockers and Sanderson 1 5/8" block huggers all ARP fastners and head AND main studs. All this going into a '65 C10 with a prepped TH350 2800 stall converter and 3.42 with a Detroit TrueTrac in the factory 12 bolt. Should run like HELL don't ya think?

Get back with how that holley setup works out for you. I was thinking of trying a efi, when santa comes and goes.

I've been gone awhile but appreciate all the info.,by the way I'm running 2.02 fuelly heads ,Ive switched to a 770cfm carb,I took it for a little test run down the road and it seemed to really run well and strong ,but I'm playing with the timing and carb adjustments .
