Default big block heads

Im building a 489 for 88 chevy truck (4.25 stroke 4.28 bore.)
it has 11.8:1 pistons with a 119cc head
Solid roller cam 248*/254* .653"/.660'' 110* lobe sep. (kept mild for the street)

Original plans were to use a pair of ported 781 oval port heads with 2.19 1.88 11/32 stem valves that i have. But i figure i can get a pair of BARE heads for around $1500. ill use those and use my existing all new parts in them alotugh i may have to get bigger 2.25 intake valves. Anybody now of a good head in that pice range.

Must be aluminum.
119cc chamber.
stock exhaust port location or very close.
large oval port or small rectangle port.

Im thinking Brodix Race rite oval ports.
Thanks

a bare set of afrs should be close to that or darts=315 or 335.all the aftermarket aluminum heads should be decent flowing.i'd stick with a smallish runner for velocity and torque.

My first thought is the Merlin II heads w/305cc runners. Not too small, but not too large, either. Only thing is I'm not sure if you can get them bare, as the only price listed is for assembled..........

Maybe check their site to find out.

did some homework heres what i found
-AFR 305cc rectangle port as cast $1,850
-Dart pro 1 310 cc rectangle port $1,400
-Protopline 320 cc rectangle port $1,199
-Canfield 310cc rectangle port $1,299
-Brodix Race Rite 270 cc oval port $1530.00
-Brodix Race Rite 294 cc rectanlge port $1,694
Edelbrock heads wont work with my piston domes supposedly.
Dont see world heads Bare anywhere.

The 1st four heads flow alomost indenitcal peaking at around 350-360 cfm with mid flow numbers really close.
The brodix heads flow about 330-340 at peak.
I think the only ones with the stock port exit are the Brodix, I dont want to have header probelms.

Hmm big decision. Im sure all heads would make some pretty good power.

-Brodix Race Rite 270 cc oval port $1530.00
Those get my vote.

The rectangle port heads wouldn't be bad either, so I guess ti's just what you want.

Good luck.

I have a buddy w/ a 496", ProTopLine 320cc heads, small .540/.560 lift hyd roller cam, and it hauls ***. He's running 7.25@95mph in the 1/8th in a 1990 Chevy 454ss, 4000lbs w/ him in it.

I would say the ProTopLines or AFRs.

Yeah ive been readin' up about your guys trucks on 454ss. Your truck really impressed me, thats sweet.

Im going to wait a few weeks before ordering heads. I want to look out on Racing junk or ebay for some used ones and save some cash. If they need work no biggie i do it all day at work.

I thinkinh im going for the canfields or Brodix RR ovals

Are you using the TBI? What cam?

If using the TBI id stick with a head like a 049 or 781 with a little work.

The AFR 305cc rectangle ports would probably work good, or the Pro TopLine 320cc. Depending on your future plans, you don't want to get something that won't meet your needs later on.
