Need helping with SBC cam for '55 Belair
I know pretty well how to spec out an LS1 cam, no worries there. However the SBC stuff leaves me guessing alittle. I am trying to get the ideal cam for our project '55 Belair. The shortblock came in yesterday and I am ordering the intake and carb. today. So what we have left is the cam and heads. Its a 355 ci. 10.5:1 shortblock. Pink rods(which I know arent the best) forged crank and flat top pistons with 2cc reliefs. Looking to spin to around 6300rpm with a built 700r4 stalling at 2800-3000 rpm. 12 bolt with 3.55 in the rear. Probably will see some rode time 4 or 5 days a month and will have a/c. So basically looking for max performance without sacrificing power stuff or too bad surging at idle. I guess I should also say it will be topped with a Barry Grant 700cfm carb. and torquer II. If any of you guys have some decent 64cc heads you are looking to move pm me with specs and pricing. Will buy immediatley if price is right.
Thanks
Brandon

Dont even bother with an off the shelf cam, get something custom. I suggest contacting Elgin Cams. www.elgincams.com

I run a cam from Crane in my 355. It's specs are 244/252 (@ .050) and .518/.536 lift on a 112 lobe center. It makes great power, runs real smooth, and I got almost 15 miles to the gallon on a recent 150 trip home from the Ocean City, Maryland car show...with my 700r4. At last years Super Chevy show, (pics below), I got first place in my class and the guy that got 2nd came up after the show and said, "It's a good thing they don't judge them on how they sound or you would have gotten first AND second!" This might not be the "perfect cam" for all out power, but the sound and drivability is super.

Well, this is certainly an open question!
You need to give up as already stated, the style of cam you want. But, if idle quality is a concern, and power acc. as well, look for something with at least a 110-114 LSA.
Go with the max lift possible while keeping duration in check, 1.6 rockers are good way to help that.
I have built some very nice drivers with cams in the 480-510 lift range, and personal as well as customer feedback indicates good results.
