Carbon Build Up

So, my car sat for almost the entire winter and now that I'm driving it again, it stumbles when I rev it up real hard and give it a work out. My dad says that I'm just blowing the carbon out of it. How long does this take? and opinions?

Black smoke coming out of the exhaust is the rich setting. Tune the carb and the richness will stop and the black smoke will go away.

It's not quite that rich. I have to run it heavy to make up for compression and only 93 octane gas

Well....a rich tune will make the exhaust black but after a WOT throttle run, all the carbon should be gone so if it still does it after that then its the richness of the tune.
