Any horsepower estimates?

Default Any horsepower estimates?

I put together a really good combination on a 383 that before being dyno'd, all the local hot rodders that were there were making their power estimates on as usual. I thought it would be fun if you guys wanted to put some of your knowledge and experience to a little test and see how close you could come. We had alot of fun doing this at the shop. Here's the build.

Bore = 4.030
Stroke = 3.75
Head are ProTopline Vortec replacement ported and flowing 280 cfm@.500, and 285@.600 intake and 190@.500 and .600 exhaust without pipe, and . 2.02 & 1.60, estimate port cc's at 180.
Compression is 10.8-1
6.125 h-beam rods
Forged lightweight flattop pistons
Edlebrock Super Victor type intake with plenum smoothed some.
Cam is solid street roller single pattern 244 @ .050 and .591 net lift with 1.6 rockers on 108 lc installed at 108 cl
950 cfm HP carb Super sucker 1 1/2 " spacer
1 3/4" 34" dyno headers with about a 15" 3 1/2" collector.
ON PUMP GAS 91 super
On an engine dyno SF901. Electric fuel and water pump.

I'll post numbers latter if anyone is interested in taking a guess at it. I just wanna see if this is as much fun as we had at the shop, not to try and make anyone look stupid. Only one guy here came close besides me. Even the guy that owned the dyno.

I'm going to say about 575-600hp and 550 ft lbs.

I say that due to dynos I have seen with 383s, 195 AFR heads, and a 230/236 cam putting down 520 hp.

Here's how it ended up.

Peak torque was at 4700rpms and it was 527 ft.lbs

Pear power was at 6300rpms and it was 542.

What was interesting was torque down low,

3100=441 ft.lbs
3300=446 ft.lbs
3500=455 "
3700=475 "
3900=503 "
4100=513 "
4300=523 "
carried over 500flt.lbs till 5500

Well....I was a little on the high side....not bad....I would have though it would have made more with the higher compression and bigger cam.

Actually I sold the motor to a guy who said he was going to put it in a 1/2ton 4X4. That should be kinda fun.With a little more agressive cam and some intake work I may have been able to push it up around the 560-570 mark, but it would have taken more head work to get it above that. I actually built the motor to get rid of some parts that I had laying around, and to get enough money to buy my flow bench was the main reason. And to prove to the guy that I was working for that he was taking the wrong approach to building his engines. His last two 12-1, 383's only got up to the 515hp mark, and he was happy with that.

I'm curious if anyone else has a dyno'd engine that the rest of us could take a stab at. It gets to be a big thing around here on dyno days. The only thing we haven't done yet is to make a board and start taking bets. But I have won a few $$$ on the side.

I can always do a dyno challenge, but it would be a chassis dyno and not an engine dyno. I'd like to see what my next bullet loses between the engine and chassis dyno, so that might be a interesting side note.

Not the most powerful thing but im throwin some combos together

Did you use a tall deck block? If not how did you get 6.125 rods to work? 1" compression height pistons?

Yep 1.000" I normally wouldn't have done this but I picked up the rods cheap.

I'm not sure about the intake and carb combo, but with everything being ideal with the 200 heads I would give it around 485-490 hp and with the 180's probably about 470-475. I think the intake with be the biggest question.
