What's the casting# on the block? It would be on the upper left rear corner behind the #7 cylinder. You can tell quite about the block from that number. A very common casting # is 3970010, I have an earlier 69 block that is a 3932388 casting.
The 2482 casting on the bearing caps I believe is a high nickel cap. I'd be lead to believe it may be an early 70's block if the caps are original, but it's been a couple of years since i've really researched this.
The TRW L2256 piston is a heavy forged piston and will be fine for a street/inexpensive race engine. I wouldn't complain about the price either.

and yes being the whole thing was free ... i can not complain about the price. on top of that i just picked up a $30 eldebrock manifold. now i just need to pick out a set of heads, and throw together all of the cheap parts that will nickle and dime me to death. and the engine will be complete. from there i get the joy of finding a car to put it into which so far i am looking @ 69-72 nova's. hardest part is trying to decide what kind of power i want to make and what can i make with the heavy pistons.
otherwise the engine would be almost a DD setup as in a year or so after running it with a carb i plan to swap it over to FI w/ megasquirt controling fuel and timing so that and a 700r4 should make a good combo for a quick old car i can daily drive and have some fun with
its been almost 5years since i've rebuilt a v8 or worked on them .. time to get back into the game as turbo 4's are getting boring
