Default distribuitor options for BBC

i've been thinking about going BBC for my car since its just that much easier to get even more power for probably less investment. anyways, i know space is HIGHLY limited and i was curious if there is an option of moving the distribuitor off the rear of the motor and up to the front (similar to how guys run dist. on LSX cars) anyone have any type of experience with this, or any other input to add? thanks...

Check the sticky at the top of the page on SBC/BBC conversion. You can leave the distribuitor in its stock location and even change it without haveing to pull the motor.

You can run the MSD distributor in the rear. If you want MSD also has a front mount but you have to have a Jesel belt drive and a crank trigger.

I didn't put any part #'s in the sticky. All I'm running is a stock distribuitor right now. When I got the motor thats what was on there so I'm just going to run with it.

I plan on running the crab style in the normal location and a crank trigger up front for more acurate timeing.

^^^^ The only choice. MSD crank trigger. We run giant tunnel rams and N2O crap all over the place and still have room. The front mount is a pain in the butt & expensive to convert everything. Good luck, BBC is the way.

Foggers not done yet in this picture. Will look thru some others disk later this week.
It's nothing special, standard low profile dist. We use crab cap on my tunnel ram motors or standard cap on single dominators.

Found some more, but they won't load. The standard cap rubbed so we switched to a crap cap.

ahh, damn, i didn't realilze they made dist. that small, very cool. btw, that motor looks wicked. does anyone make a single plane for the bbc that isn't quite as tall as that tunnel ram? i did some looking around and saw a bunch of dual plane and tunnel rams, but not many similar to the "vic jr ls1" manifold style...

Brodix and Dart make some nice manifolds as well, Tall, single plain, nitrous bosses, 4 corner cooling. good bang for the buck.

I was going to try an Msd HEi distributor for my big block. havent quite got that far yet though, if you take the cap off inside the engine bay it should clear in and out fine. i cut the firewall away under the plastic cowl for more room.

That's a 9000 + RPM big block with heads that flowed approx 530 cfm at .950 it has to be that big. There are plenty that are much lower. I have Brodix heads but never used their intakes. I have used profiler, edelbrock, dart & sheet metal intakes, they are all pretty close, just make sure you get the correct one for your flow, & power band.

Just my opinion. If you have room, we are really pushing tunnel rams. All the motors we have switched have been flying, 50 ish HP no other changes, I will never use a single carb again.

Good luck.

No not at all, just never got around to one. The dart & sheet metal intake I bought used. The Profiler & edelbrock tunnel rams plus the victor & weiand I bought new because they were the best for my combination. I also never used an holly intake. I have nothing against any of them.

That .950 cam is not even my biggest. The heads for my 705" came with a 1.050, I ended up giving it back, that thing scared the hell out of me.

I can't stress enough, combination comes 1st, don't try to get the biggest cam, biggest carb ect. It's all in the combination. Don't fudge anything when ordering it will only slow you down. I still vote tunnel ram.

Good luck.

the only problem i have with tunnel ram is clearance in the car, i don't want to have to cut the cowl up so bad that i have to get a new windshield etc. what i might have to do is get a block/heads, get'em in the car and then try a few different manifolds to see what works with the hood i have etc. that car of your's a top sportsman, or pro mod?

ok thanks, and i can 2nd that its all about the right combo as well, I was just blown away by your numbers, although a bigger CID motor will normaly need and beneifit from bigger cam or heads. just something i dont normaly hear about or have ever seen in person. my freinds think my .700 lift cam is suicide hahaha I was actualy intrested in a sheet metal intake as well, but i plan on running in the real street or true street class. not sure of other tracks, but my local track they are not permited.

you shouldnt hit glass.. but you would need a cowl hood for a tunnel ram I was looking at VFN's for my trans am, they extend to the windsheild. only if i need it though.. i still want to have a stock hood, throw my zr1's back on and take it to a local Gm dealer for an ses code

i have the sunoco hood from VFN for the car, its not the "BIG" version tho, i think its like 3-4" extra clearance.
