What is a budget build in your book? Also let me know your HP goals.

Just a stock rebuild. 1000 bux or less hopefully. just tryin to get it cleaned up and throw in some new bearings and stuff but i need to find torque specs for the mains and rods and heads and whatever else that i would generally have some probs with.

Sorry to say but $1000 or less will not get you a quality rebuild. Machine work alone will be around $800 from a quality shop. Even though some consider the 400 Pontiac a small block, it really is a big block. When you go to get parts for your motor you might as well say that you are working on a HEMI. I would wait and save your money until you get about $2000 together. I am rebuilding several Pontiac's right now and can get the parts that you need, but you need to save some money up.

Try here for info.

http://www.pontiaczone.com/forum/index.php

350, 400, 426 and 455's are all the same block size and considered big blocks.....
$1000 is going to be tough but do-able if you don't need pistons or rods.

I had a good friend in highschool with a 400 Pontiac in a 1972 Ventura.

He beat on that thing for 4 years on a nightly basis and it always ran like a top. He even used it for a DD for a couple of years.

It was a mild build and ran high 13's, which was strong in the early 1990's...

I love those motors..

look on http://www.thirdgen.org also. Lotsa folks like to build these for third generation f bodies. I seen 400sb blocks/heads/internals in the for sale column regularly. There was a guy in Nashville was looking to clear one out, I almost went for it for my 89 gta, still considering options though. Think he was letting the block (which had been cleaned, decked, honed and magnafluxed) for like 300-400 and the original stock internals thrown in for free. If you keep your eyes open for a while, you'll catch something eventually. If you are in a hurry, well then...$$$

It looks to me like you are talking about a small block Chevy 400. The 326/350/389/400/421/428/455 Pontiac engines are big blocks, and then Pontiac had one small block of their own which was a 301. Bob

Well, yeah, I was talking about a small block 400, because that was the title in OP subject line. The Chevy SB 400 was used extensively in the 70s in a wide range of cars and trucks. Don't know where you got the idea I was talking about a pontiac block, when you say 400 sbc, people pretty much know what you are talking about. And your in the business? heh

Rob97 is right,

http://forums.performanceyears.com/forums/

Is the best and biggest Pontiac site on the web.
Depending on your current motor and if you can do the build yourself, $1K isn't out of the question.
