Default SBC Steel Crank Identification

I just picked up a SBC 350 short block. The date code says it's assembled in 1999. It's supposed to have a steel crank but I'm suspect, it looks cast to me. What are the major identifiers to look for. I'll post pics tonight if needed.

Look at the parting line on the counter weights. If it is a very thin line, you have a cast crank. If the line is more like 1/2'' thick, you have a forged crank. Do a google and you should be able to find some pics.

Thanks. I'll look at the parting lines.

I did a search and found these pics:

ge the casting number off of the crank and check out mortec.com. They have numerous casting numbers for heads, blocks, and cranks for small block and big block chevy.

Good luck.
