Default Setting timing

It's been awhile since i've messed with dist. and timing them. If my memory sevrs me right I bring #1 cylinder tdc after exhaust valve closes and set drop in dist. facing #1 on the cap, right? It been at least 10 years since i've messed with this stuff. Thanks ken

If u have a marked balancer, we always line it up with timing desired, then drop in dist.
We also have crank triggers and locked dist, so don't forget to subtract dist timing from total.

A mild motor has more leway, than a monster, when trying to fire with the timing off a little. Good luck.

Ya, I lined up the marks on the balancer after the intake valve closed, then dropped in the dist. pointing at #1 on the dist. cap. This is a very mild build on this motor. The motor is a 350 with some 305 heads on it and a 204/214 cam. I didn't build this motor i'm just putting it in the car for a friend. Any ideas on what the timing should be set at? I was gonna start with factory timing for break-in then then bump it up to what ever after break-in is over with.

Stock SBC is 8* base ignition timing.
