Ok Just Looking For Some Ideas, I Have A 72 Nova Been Running A Mild 402bbc And A Glide For A While And The 402 Started Making Well Lets Just Say Some Not So Nice Noises , But On To The New Engine I Go.
Heres What I Have To Spend And What I Want To Do With The Car. I Have $5500 Dollars To Spend On The Motor And Would Like To Stay Big Block, O Yeah The Car Has 4.11 Gears Right Now, I Would Like To Get The Car In To The High Tens Or Realy Low Elevens And Be Able To Drive It On Short Trips Around Town, I Have A Mid Seventys 454 Bare Block Laying Here Right Now That I Would Like To Use Unless Theres Any Objections. Just Looking For Ideas And Different Opinions From Every Body So Lets Here Them

Rebuild the 454, don't skimp on heads and valve train, it'll do what you want.

No problem at all build the 454 with some good flowing heads and you should be in the 10's easy with a nova... And some nitrous down the line if you want more power lol

You'll be close to that $ if you buy a good rotating assembly (I'd go forged if you want to make power reliably, and go stroker 496 while you're at it). Edelbrock oval port heads, a nice solid cam, single plane intake and 750 carb will get you into the mid 10s all hooked up (buddy's car ran 10.40s at 126 mph at 3400 lbs, then a roller cam swap and a 950 HP carb got 10.11 at 129 mph).

Always good to see another Nova on the board, good luck making her fast!

I am pretty sure the block in my car is out of a 72 BBC Nova and started out a BBC 454.

Its seen from what I have been told like a 300 shot on two stages and still going

Its a 468, out of the box aluminum bow tie heads, out of the box Dart single plain intake, TH-400 on the foot brake, 12 bolt with 4.10's or 4.56's. A REAL BG ported carb, two stage plate system, all 80's technology, belt driven water pump and fan.

Adjustable panhard rod and non adjustable torque arm, 8.5 inch tire, on N20 plugs the car went 11.0-11.1 spinning the tires on the motor. On both stages it just spun. Sprating the first stage at second gear it ran 10.30@136, car has NOT been dyno tuned!
I have some QA1's for out back and adjustable torque arms, LCA barackets, going to have the torque arm made adjustable and have it all set up.
Going to go with a K&N exstream filter top (cowl hood with a regular filter top right now), electric water pump and if I can have the heads and intake ported by a local pro stock porter.

As you can see there is nothing special in it, old heads that are not even made anymore ect ect, if it does not run at least low 9's after the above then.....

Oh, pump gas motor here also and its a fully loaded car, full interior, a little heavier then factory weight

Its going to be sick. Build it right and you will be suprised what it will do. Oh and my carb only flows like 1,000CFM

Thanks for the opnions i thinking about going with a 496 at 11.5 to 1 cr and some dart iron eagle heads and a good solid mechanical roller cam and a 950 4500 or 4150 carb and a single plane manifold, plan on using forged bottom end parts.
Whats your guys thoughts on the world products rotating assemblys.

thanks
Dustin

Im all for Eagle forged stuff unless you want BIG power.

Id stay away from iron heads. WAAAYYY heavy, hold more heat, ect ect.

Search ebay for your rotating assembly components. There are several vendors on there that I plan to use for my 406 build for my 67 Camaro. Eagle forged crank and h-beam rods as well as forged pistions should yield a very strong short block. I'm with the other guys, if you can do it, make it a 496. There is no replacement for displacment. Plus all of the torque. There are alot of good choices on heads. If you can squeeze them into your budget, AFRs would be killer. Put a good roller cam in it and you should be set as long as your drivetrain can take it. You plan to use the ignition/intake/carb compenents in from your 402?

Another vote to stay away from iron heads, especially if you want to run on pump gas. AFR heads are nice as well. I'd go more around a 10.5:1 compression ratio max if you want to run pump gas unless a BIG cam that will bleed off the pressure is in the cards.
