Default Sbc 377??

I've been hearing about this 377 sbc from a few different people and I was just wondering how you make 377ci?? Is it a stroker crank, or bigger bore? And what are the 377ci engines good for? Like low end torque, or power? Can they rev high? Basically I would like to know the advantages/ disadvantages of a 377ci SBC and how to build one. Thanks!

Std bore 350 with 400 crank or the 400 block with a 350 crank, the 400 block is the highly populaer version and it is a high revver, not huge on low end torque a high end screamer though.

yes, it's simply a 400 block stuffed with a 350 crank, one of my teachers has one in an older T/A, and he says for a street car its a good low cost option and great if your into road or bracket racing.

So its basically a destroked 400? Thats kind of a cool twist. So you think a 377 with a strong bottom end and valvetrain, could hit 7500rpm and have some good mid range torque? I want to build one now! Is there any possible way to build an LSX 377??

I had a 377 mine was a 4.145 bore with a 3.50 stroke and a 6" rod. They can rev high and are mainly built for midrange and high rpm power. It can easily rev to 7,500 with the appropriate cam and valve train.

My 377 was 13-1 compression, AFR 210 heads, ultradyne roller, edelbrock super victor single plane, 950 holley HP carb, MSD 7-AL3 ignition, hooker headers and maxflow mufflers. I ran a .020 over 400 block with splayed caps. My 1st cam was a 256/263@.050 .638/.638 on a 106, then I swapped to a nitrous cam 270/284 .660 lift on a 114

Mine was built as a street strip car, I ran a TH400 rmvb T/B art carr trans and 9" 4,500 stall converter. It went low 10's on motor and went 9's on nitrous with an annular fogger.

It would have went faster but I ran a way bigger tire than I needed for a pro street look 33x16.5 and needed more gear and stall. Great motor never had an issue for over 2 - 3 years of street driving and track time.

Here is a photo. I built the motor and car in the garage, my first serious street strip car and I think the 377 was great.

so dropping a 400 block crank into my 350 gets me to a 377. Does this mean i can use the regular 350 rods, and pistons

Dropping a 400 crank into a 350 would be a 383 type build more low end torque motor. 400 and 350 cranks are different, you'd have to machine a 400 crank to get it into a 350 block, also a 350 crank would need bearing spacers in a 400 block, unless you get a custom crank made for 350/400 swaps.

The pistons wouldn't be the same either since you're adding or decreasing stroke.

You can use 5.7 rods in a 350 or 400 with the appropriate pistons.

if you get a 350 and bore it .030 over and put a 400 crank that is a 383, if you take a 400 and put a 350 crank you have a 377.

Hey Ragen, do you know if they sell an aftermarket crank with the correct size journals so I dont have to use bearing spacers? And was that a solid roller cam you were running? Did it run better with the nitrous cam or the n/a cam? What did you shift yours at and what kind of power did you make n/a?

1. Yes, they make cranks that will go into a 400 block without bearing spacers in a 3.48 or 3.50 stroke for a 377 cid.

2. Yes, it was an ultradyne solid roller, the 1st cam was just a more mild N/A cam 256/263 .638 lift on a 106 lobe I shifted it at 7,200. I went faster on the nitrous cam on the nitrous than I did with nitrous on the motor cam, the nitrous cam was also bigger, 270/284 660 lift on a 114.

3. I don't know how much power it made, never dynoed it, but I went as fast as 10.30's @128 mph on motor with the smaller cam, which should be around 520 hp, it would have made more with a bigger roller, but I street drove it a lot and would have needed more gear and more converter.

With the bigger nitrous cam I picked up on the nitrous running 9.30's with a best mph of 140. My car would have went faster but I had way more tire than I needed which slowed me down a bit 33x16.5s
