Default 383 with 5.7 rods

Can 5.7 rods be used in a 383?

Sure if you already have them and the pistons to go with them. If you are looking to purchase then I would go with the 6" rod as the price is the same.

You can use the stock 400 rods, 5.7 rods and 6.0 rods. Just have to have the correct piston pin location.

I already have the rods they are Eagle 4340 H beam 5.7 large journal. I was planing on using the forged pistons that are in my 355 right now and replace the rings if they look good when I take the motor apart and buying a compstar or eagle 4340 forged steal crank. What stroke crank will I need for the 383. I know it is a 400 crank and the block will have to be cut for the bigger crank. My block is a one piece rear main seal and is already bored 30 over.

For one, a lighter piston, for two, less wear on the cylinder walls. quicker revs.

The forged pustons in your current block you have would require the use of a stock size 400 rod. Otherwise, the piston will come out of the block about .200 or more.

You have the crank resized if it is a 2 piece block, you have a 1 piece so you need a aftermarket 3.75 stroke crank for you application. Not to mention you need stroker pistons for the 5.7 rod.



Ebay sells a set for 330$ i believe from Kieth black, that is the forged model. Verry light but uses the regular rings, not the thinner low tension set.

I think I am just going to rebuild the 355 with a forged 4340 compstar crank, eagle h bean 5.7 rods, clevite 77 bearings, the Trick Flow heads that are on it now, all arp bolts and studs, and put Je nitrous piston rings and a TPiS mini ram intake and a 150 or 200 shot of nitrous and run the hell out of it then get my car painted. I really want to get it back to together by January so I can ride it to school. Then I am going to start building a twin turbo 406. Does anyone know what it might run in the 1/4 mile with the forged 355, TPiS mini ram intake, Trick Flow heads and a 200 shot with slicks? It ran 11.62 with the 355 Trick Flow heads, Accel lower intake, runners, 58mm throttle body and a 125 shot.
